Hiya, on your first lesson they will pick youup and drive you to a quiet area. They'll then ask you how much you understand about driving and how the car actually works. they'll give you a brief explanation of the clutch, how it works and what its for. explain about the mirrors, where to look and when etc.
They'll swap seats with you so your in the driving seat and get a feel for it. Then they'll explain step by step how to pull off and let you have a go.
Basically thats all you get through on your first lesson, yes most ofit will be talking but its important to be able tounderstand what your doing rather than just being able to do it.
When you've mastered pulling off, you'll progress to driving along quiet road, turning right first and then moving onto left turns, and pulling off downhill and uphill.
Stick with it! And good luck!
I tried a female instructor and found that she made me feel uncomfortable and I felt much more relaxed with a male instructor, I was worried that a male would be a bit pervy lol but it was fine

Well Im 19 and started to learn this year.
I have a male instructor who is very easy to get on with, and very patient .
On my first lesson we went to a remote spot sat for 45 minutes learning about whats what in the car, clutch control etc.
Then for the last 15 minutes I drove about 10 metres at a time stopping and starting.
Depending on how quick you catch on will determine how long it is before your driving round the city.
Im coping just fine, I don't think it matters about age, its just putting in the enthusiasm and time.
The thing that will peobably pee you off the most is other drivers up you a*s and moving like a slug because you have to obide by the speed limits.
After you first few lessons the nervous phase will pass.
Good luck x

Hi I started driving for the first time 3 months ago and I have my driving test tomorrow! I didn't have a clue how to move off on the first lesson, I'm 24 by the way. My first instructor was a female and I didn't take to her at all so I switched to a guy who was much better, she hadn't even let me change the gears and I had 6 lessons from her, a total con as the guy I'm with said that's a first lesson thing! He will show you the basics then you will jump in the driving seat and take over, although there is a lot of information to take in at first, after a few lessons it's second nature! You will probably be on a side road with a few cars around, it's so much fun when your driving around thinking look at me i'm driving! you will be fine, we all make mistakes, I even stalled a few times today! but your instructor should make you feel comfortable and confident on the road, good luck and have fun!

I got taken to a basically deserted street and did a bit of moving around at about 10mph! It was a little scary, but if the instructor is good they will respond to how you are doing and conduct the lesson according to that.
I got a male driver at first, but he was much more keen on hitting on me and not on teaching me to drive so then I changed to a woman. She was fab! She didn't seem impatient at all, I just got on with her really well, she was very focussed and 100% committed to gettingme to pass!
Your car insurance will be cheaper at 29!!

There will definitely be explaining and showing, and almost certainly you'll be doing a certain amount of driving, if only just moving the car around a quiet spot so you begin to understand how it works. It'll depend on how you get on and how you feel. Don't worry about your instructor's gender.
Actaully you're probably at about the best age, as you've grown up from a cocky teenage know-all who won't be told and you aren't yet so set in your ways that you aren't prepared to listen. Enjoy!

You can imagine that, as a male instructor, I get somewhat cheesed off when I hear about other male instructors making female pupils feel uneasy - it lets the rest of us down. Anyway, the gender of your instructor shouldn't make any difference - it's the quality of instruction that counts and there are plenty of very good and plenty of very bad instructors.
If you don't like yours, change - for whatever reason.
If your instructor is good, he/she will tailor your lessons (including your first) to suit you and your preferences. Some pupils don't drive at all on their first lesson, some drive quite a bit - it varies from person to person. Most importantly, don't judge your progress against others - everyone is different.
The others are right - the instructor will begin by taking you somewhere with little traffic and begin by teaching you the controls - from there on you are likely to do a simple move away and stop. It's very straightforward and there is absolutely nothing to be nervous about. Just relax and have fun.
Good luck :-)

Hi I own a driving school myself now but I didn't pass my driving test until I was 27!
I tried twice when I was 17 but I had a HORRIBLE driving instructor who was sarcastic and belittling and just plain pig-like in every way. I wasn't ready for the test and couldn't drive to save my life. I failed miserably twice, lost confidence and gave up for 10 years.
At the vastly more mature age of 27 and this time with a lovely, patient and supprtive driving instructor, I passed.
Now, a few more years down the line, I own a driving school and pontificate at length about how to drive!
DON'T LOOK AT THE GENDER OF A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR - LOOK AT THE PERSON! You can't generalise by thinking "women are more this, or men are more that....".
Both my instructors were male. One was a pig and one was lovely.
I know some female instructors who are AWFUL. Nasty, sarcastic, bitchy old-bags. I know some who are the exact opposite.
All my instructors are hand-picked to be as little like MY first driving instructor as possible...from my own experience, I know how demoralising an impatient and sarcastic driving instructor can be, so no-one like that gets anywhere near my customers or my company name :)
Personal recommendation is the best way to find a good instructor. If you know of someone who has learnt with an individual, ring them up or if they work with a larger school, ring up and ask for that particular instructor.
Have a lesson with whoever you choose and see whether you feel comfortable and at ease with that instructor before committing yourself to a course of lessons. If you're not happy, find someone who suits you better!
What you do on the first lesson varies from instructor to instructor, but most decent instructors, get the inevitable "talking" bit over with as soon as possible and get you starting to drive. You will need things explained, but too much talk gets very dull and you stop taking in what's being said after a while anyway, so it's better to get on and "do" rather than waffle. At the very least, the controls will be explained and the safety checks, then you'll learn how to move and stop the car. If there's time, and you're coping OK, you may move onto a bit of "real" driving on suitable quiet roads. A good instructor will go at your pace and neither rush you or hinder your progress in learning :)
Good luck with learning to drive:)

you should be taken out to a quiet area, and drive first time, don't worry about the instructor , you can always change if you don't like them, but give them a chance, male or female, its their job to teach, and both have patience, enjoy learning.

Hi, I am an ex driving instructor and can help you. First of all don't worry about being nervous on your first lesson. All instructors male/female are highly trained experts and nervous pupils especially on the first lesson are their speciality. Your first lesson will involve learning all about the controls e.g gears, steering, clutch etc.. You will not move off the spot for the first hour as their is a lot of showing to do. You will then move off for the first time in first gear and drive for about 100 yards and then pull over and stop. You will do this a few times and that will be it for your first lesson. It goes fast believe me! If you would feel more comfortable with a female instructor then I would suggest that you request this. It is a very very common request. I was 18 when I learned to drive and now I am 31. I do not think age makes a difference as to what you are going to feel like when learning. It is still exactly the same. All the very best.
