An insurance company need the VIN# to write you a policy.
So compare companies and do your homework first.
When you buy and title a car in California, you don't need to show proof of insurance to do the transfer. But the DMV expects you to have your insurance in place within 30 days. If you don't, they will suspend your registration.
So Transfer the Title to your name first. then
