this charge only applies if you do not go through your insurance then the owner who wants to claim the vehicle will be hit with a charge of £150 recovery and any storage charge unless the car is found of the public highway (eg field) then it can be more ,if the vehicle has been in pounded due for other reasons its and its not the owners fault they can request from the police that they pay all charges the tow operator sends the owner a letter informing them the police are finished with the car and its ready to be collected and the storage charges are started to clock up after 14 days they can apply for disposal to crush the car . cars driven with no insurance then confiscated by the police have to be collected with all relevant paper work in order and stamped my the police with in 14 days all charges have to be paid by the guilty party or the vehicle gets crushed

That is also true in the US.
Its your car - you are responsible for the fees.
However, if the thief is ever arrested - you can sue him for the fees.
Also- if you have comprehensive coverage on your policy - your insurance company will usually pay the tow/storage fees as part of the claim.

I think they look at it like it's your fault for having a car in the first place never mind letting it get stolen.most insurances hate paying out or perhaps you've just discovered that .it's sad that the victim always pays the price.
