The insurance is in force from its "effective date" - however you may not legally drive a car (in the UK) without holding a certificate of motor insurance,
Look you 5 twits - I have been working in insurance for 35 years - do not thumbs down me when I give correct advice.
Non UK answerers - you may be correct in your home country but in the UK you HAVE TO HAVE a certificate of insurance or you are driving illegally.
Asker - it shouldn't take more than a couple of days for your certificate to arrive.

You can have the coverage effective same day or future dated. You can get quotes now if you know the year/make/model/vin#, but you have to have proof of ownership to actually purchase the insurance. It can be done on the same day as purchase.
Be aware you will have to have at minimum a months payment for downpayment!
You can get proof of the coverage that day. You can print a temp ID and that is acceptable until you get the ID card in mail - which half the time is a print out anyways. Lots of companies quit giving the plastic cards

Camel's right: Insurance will either take immediate effect, or at a later time if you specify so.
Geoff is wrong, you're covered regardless of whether or not you're in physical possession of a certificate: Most fleet policies only produce certificates on request (ie if the police ask), but the insurers all submit their data to the MID (motor insurance database) & that's what's checked against systems such as the police's ANPR (automatic number plate recognition). If there's a delay in your insurer updating the database, the police will actually just ring your insurer & confirm that you're covered.

The second that you buy the insurance online, it is in Full Effect at that moment.
Example: If you go online at 10:05 a.m. to buy from insurance company, you fill in some information, then you pay them, you will receive some kind of "confirmation" at , lets say 10:24 a.m. from the company that you do have insurance with them, then at 10:24 a.m. on that day you do have insurance coverage on the car.
SO if that car is in a wreck at 11:15 a.m. THAT day Your car IS covered.

You can legally drive your even if you dont have Motor Insurance Certificate. As soon as you have made a contract with the Insurance company yo can drive at the same time but make sure you note down your policy number in the event of any pullover by police so that they can check whether you are insured or not.

your insurance takes effect the second you apply for it online.you can specify a start date but most just start it from when they apply.
EDIT.....
you dont have to wait till you have it ''in hand''...thats the idea of doing it online...once its done your coverd, you can drive then...you DONT have to wait till it comes in the post.
EDIT....
JG ,as always,is also correct........infact if i wasnt so obsessed with yahoo answers,he would be the top answerer and not me....

If you know the day you are going to have possession of the car then contact the insurance company now and tell them what date you want the insurance to start.
If it is still a couple of weeks then you should have the insurance certificate when you pick up the car.
Insurance will take effect from when you tell them to start it.
