If I am under my mothers insurance, will it help me in the future when I branch off?
I am thinking about putting my first car insurance under my mothers name, but in a couple years I want to start paying it on my own. Will the fact that I was under her name help me a little with my rate? Or will it not matter, and the insurance company will treat me as a new driver?

It will not matter. What will matter are your driving habbits and you school grades.. Yes people with better grades get better insurance prices. WhY? Because insurance companies have run studies that show people who performe well in school are more responsable when it comes to driving. so if you want your rates to be as low as possible for your mom and yourself. no tickets, no accidents, and get good grades. When I was in college and mantaining a 3.7 Avg. my rates where lower then just about all my friends. I would have your mother ask about good student discounts and see what the scale is with her insurance company.

Regardless it will be based on your record, and of course age. When it's with your Mom, she gets a discount for other coverages, but any new driver is pretty expensive. If you continue the coverage with the same company, or salesmen then you should get a discount too.

you will have a proof of prior insurance if you get on your mom's policy now. it will give you a discount up to 20%. plus, if your mom's name is on the title she will have to be the name insured until she signs it over to you.

With most companies, it will help you obtain a lower rate. The longer your insurance history, the better!

It shouldn't matter. Your mother will have to add your name on her policy. When you decide to get your own policy they can check your history with that insuarnce company.

The only thing that matters with insurance companies,is the risk.If your driving record in the next two years is impeccable, and you have established a good credit score, then you can shop around for insurance. Most companies will give you a low rate, and then jack it up the next year, when they do and you maintain a good record, say good bye to them and find a company with a lower rate.don't try to talk them down, just move on.
