Other than the fact that you should be carrying papers to prove that you're covered by insurance, I don't think that the police officers have anyway of verifying that you do, or do not, have insurance.
Law enforcement doesn't call the insurance company.
I would call your company and get them to send out proof of payment and proof of insurance on the date that you were pulled over and then take both to the court house.
Do it quickly though. Some places you only have 10 days to show proof of insurance or you have to pay court fees or a fine.

Did one of your direct debt payments bounce?

If so... a non-sufficient funds can and will result in your insurance being canceled. All it takes is one payment to be missed or bounced.

Before you go to your agents office and jump up and down - yelling - making demands and acting a fool of yourself------ try walking calmly into your agents office and letting him know what happened and ask them to look into it.

Most likely this is not an insurance company mistake. I'm not going to say they don't happen - they do - rarely. Usually a situation like this results because a payment was missed or an NSF occurred.

As long as you can prove that you have paid, I see no problems.

The insurance company should inform you by letter if the cover is being withdrawn, but to do it like this and carry on drawing the installements is tantamount to fraud.

Insurance companies have a fail safe system so that if your not covered payments won't come out. If they were doing this the FSA would come down on them like a ton of bricks so I'm sure they wouldn't do so.

I get people all the time who have been stopped by the police and claim to have insurance and blame it on the insurer - This is a classic example of what people say.
Not calling you a liar - but the police may think that (Its the oldest one in the book)

If you can prove to the police and insurer that you have been paying then you may have a case, my only guess is that you may have additional cover (i.e courtesy car package) which may not have been cancled. But again - Insurance companies operate a failsafe system to stop this happening.
The policy has to be "live" before a direct debit could be setup and they would 100% notify you by phone or letter, if they attempted to contact you and got neither - your outta luck!
