I am an insurance broker, I check rates with several different companies to get the best deal.

The cheapest isn't always the best!

You will want to know the levels of coverage, Liability, collision Comprehensive, your deductibles.

Who repairs the vehicle in case of an accident, do you get a rental car,

Most companies require first timers to pay first and last, either with cash or a check. Some companies do require full payment so check around.

My cheapest companies don't have the best coverage, but it all depends on what you want.

$1 million Liability is pretty standard, that covers you for damages you cause, and with personal injury $1 million can add up quickly.

The process is pretty simple for you once you have quotes and have chosen a company. If you're working with agents its a good idea to go in and meet with them/someone in their office because they can explain the coverage to you and discuss some of the options in deductibles, roadside service, rental reimbursement, etc. Once you've made your decision you'll just want to let that company know, they may need a little more information from you to complete the application and they'll want to know when you'd like to start your policy. You will need to pay by the day you have your policy start, so not necessarily the day you sign up - say you called today to let whichever company know you wanted to start with them on May 1st, you shouldn't have to actually pay them until the 1st when your policy starts.
For how much you will need to pay that will depend on the company you get insurance from and how you choose to pay. Pretty much every company offers a monthly payment plan to make it easier for you financially and depending on how they set up their plan you would need to pay either 1 month or 2 months. You'll want to make sure and ask the companies you get quotes from about that, as well as any service charges to pay monthly since they can range between companies and payment methods.
Liability is the biggest part of your policy and the part that people always wonder what they should have. I can tell you that from what I've seen (I don't know every state) but state minimums don't protect you at all! You should at least have 100/300/100. If you caused an accident that would give you $100,000 per person, up to $300,000 per accident to pay for the other peoples injuries/hospital bills. It also gives you $100,000 for property damage which would repair whatever you hit - a car, building, etc. There is no magic number of liability that I can say you should get without knowing more about your assets, and with the costs of medical bills and things like that 100/300 is definitely a minimum that I would recommend getting. This is another thing that an agent or their staff could go over in more detail with you, and give you more specifics on coverages for your state such as medical payments (these cover you and other people in your car).

I hope that is helpful/makes sense, it can be hard to explain by typing out and insurance is different in every state.

i'd say talk to a bunch of people who already have car insurance, then talk to progressive, they will give you quotes of competitor insurance companies and the competitors might be lower.
