if it's the applicable tax disk for the vehicle
and your legal yes,
it does not have to be in your actual possesion

Not Ecky Boy
yes. But when does he get home? If it's like in 3 weeks or something, you just might get caught.

Depends where you live, too. And if you park where there are traffic wardens, they will shop you.

But if it's just for a day or two you should be Okay. The car IS taxed after all, you are just "failing to display".

hellokitty
Yes if you want to risk loosing your licence! If you have an accident in a car with no valid tax disc displayed you are techically not driving with any insurance. So who would pay for the damage, and do you want to get banged up? The choice is yours!

Hello,

(ANS) YES! certainly you can drive the vehicle because a) you've paid for a new disk & so are upto date, hence the vehicle is vaild. b) dont get stopped by the police or traffic warden if you avoid it because that would be a hassle as you would have to explain the situation c) The police can check to see if your telling the trueth about the tax disk anyway so you would be OK even if stopped.

The law says the disc has to be displayed on the windscreen but you might be able to get away with it if you explain you do have it because the date you bought it appears on the disc !!

What is that ?

psych_78
Yes you can!! If you get pulled up by the police they can do a check and will see that you purchased a tax disc!! However depending on where you live you may get a fine from a parking attendant. In some towns/boroughs the parking attendants have the power to hand out fines for untaxed cars!! But once again you could just appeal the ticket!!

Your tax disc should be on show at all times

If you ask if you can drive it, you've obviously got keys to get in the car & put the tax disc in the window, so why wait & risk a fine that will put the car off the road.

Technically, you can't, but in all likelihood, even if you were stopped, the police would not take any action once you explain the situation. They would probably just ask you to make sure you got it back asap. They just need to do a simple check to realise the car is taxed. However it might be a good idea to put an old tax disc or somethign that looks like a tax disc in it's place until you get the real one back so that you don't attract as much attention. Otherwise you'll be more likely to have the continual inconvinience of being stopped by the police until you get it back, or being reported to the DVLA by people who should mind their own business, as it's blindingly obvious if theres nothing there at all! So in summary, technically no you can't, but effectively in reality, yes you can becuase it's unlikely anything will happen.

p.s People who report cars for not having tax should mind their own business and stop stereotyping people with cars without a current disk as all the same, naming no names ^ cough cough ^. Your case is the typical example of this.
Often the situation is not as black and white as you'd like to think. Let the system do it's job without interfering. They're probably sh*tting themselves already every time they have to drive it incase they get stopped, and might intend to get one asap but have nowhere else to keep the car in the mean time and u could be opening a whole can of worms for a nice person and causing stress for them by reporting them.

The Alchemist
You might get issued a ticket and in which case the DVLA will be informed. They will look on their computer as to whether the vehical is taxed or not and will inform the Police Officer if it is or isn't.
If the vehicle is taxed then the offence will change from not having and excise licence to failure to display and excise licence. But action is rarely taken on this.

I'm confused by your question, at first I thought you haven't go the keys to get in and display the tax disc but you are asking whether you can drive it so you must have the keys. If you have the tax disc and the keys to the car - display the new tax disc.

Yes you can, if you bought it online its automatically recorded on the police national computer, so if they radio in your cars reg no for any reason they wont get told that it has a vehicle excise expired marker against it.

That said it is an offence to not display your tax disk but i'd be very surprised if you were actually booked for it.

So yes you can as you are taxed but if you get some jobsworth plod you still could be prosecuted.

No, you have to diplay the disk at all times. You can be done if you do not. There are a lot of cameras that recognise out of date disks now, esp. on motorways and roadside checks.

I think you can yes, plus even if you are stopped they will just run a check through dvla and see that you do have one, then they will just give you a minor telling off for not displaying it, Its worth the risk as I seriously doubt you would get caught.

Mind you the police are pretty good at stopping the law abiding folk for minor offences while the real criminals get away with what ever they want.

You have tax disc for your car, but you must display else you can be fined.

legaly no you cant drive till the disc is in the car

Was this answer helpful to you?  Yes  /  No

Hi T
You can get prosecuted for failure to display the disc, although they probably wouldn't prosecute when they find you actually have one, but I wouldn't want to take that chance.

Ignore all comments that say Yes. If you drive the car without a tax disc you would be committing an offence of failing to display! I know, I have called the police and dvla once before to check this. Don't do it!! Then don't even give you grace if you lost the disc. It makes no difference to them whether you have paid for it. Not displaying it is a seperate offence. Next time, look at the back of the tax disc, its all on there.

The motoring offecnce is for NOT displaying a valid tax disc - irrespective of whether you have one or not. If you are 100% percent sure that he has got it for you and that if stopped your car could pass a visual road worthiness examination by a policeman then go ahead.

Was this answer helpful to you?  Yes  /  No

Chadders
It's an offence not to display a current tax disc in the car you are driving on a public road. If you get caught the police can confiscate your car until you show them the tax disc and that will cost you.

Sir Sidney Snot
Not officially it HAS to be displayed in the car
