I don't think they should do a re-test but if you gain so many points in a given time then you should have to do the test again. I think in America they have a driving school for when you get caught so many times speeding. Perhaps somebody from America could put some more light onto the matter

not after 10 years, but over 65 yes, after all years ago you did'nt need to sit a driving test, so many older drivers should sit a test

That sounds like a great idea. Make driver's license good for 10 years, to get a new one, you retest.
The only problem is that would cut down business for the DMV, which means they would have less workers. Which means that when people do have ot renew, the workers would be so overwhelmed that they would pretty much do the same thing they do now - give anyone a license as long as they can stumble into the DMV and appear to have the intelligence of a trained chicken.

I think it should be sooner than that even like every five maybe...because even if the roads don't change, your driving skills can

I have to ask WHY? Yes in 10 years the road system has changed but the changes didn't occur overnight! They've changed gradually and most drivers have changed with them.
My husband took his test 40 years ago when the Black and White speed sign meant NO LIMIT! Not the 60/70 mph it is now! He doesn't however drive at those same speeds now. He couldn't even if he wanted to! There is too much traffic on the roads! He has been re tested several times because he is now a proffessional bus/coach driver! He's never failed! I learnt to drive 22 years ago and I think I could pass another test if I had to. It's not that I think I'm a good driver I know I've got faults, but I've also got one really good thing I didn't have the first time round! Confidence! The confidence of 22 years worth of experience on lots of roads in all conditions not the 22 hours of learning how to control a car enough to pass a test on the three or four hour long routes I did learn on. I'd just need the old glasses on to be able to see the signs. lol
You dont learn to really drive till after you pass!
Insurance companies will tell you that the majority of accidents are caused by inexperience.
What should be tested in older drivers is hearing and eyesight!

No, but I think we should all complete a questionaire for our insurance companies to prove that we are fully conversant with road law and markings.
Too many people that passed their test years ago are unable to identify the latest Highway Code requirements, and new road markings.

I think:
Cylists should be made to sit an exam and all bicycles must carry a reg plate that is linked to the riders I.D
The police should park up over motorway bridges and setupaspeed trap to fine everyone going over 70mph- a massive sting operation. Which if results in hundreds of banswill help to ease traffic.
Licencing should have to be like in Canada when you have to pay to keep the privalge, but if you dont renew within so many years, you would have to take a refresher course.

not so much of resitting a test more of a driving class where you reread the highway code and have a test after
i drive around all day in town and some of the driving skills i see leave a lot to be desired im sure by rereading the highway code they would possibly drive jus abit better
althou i do think taxi driver should have to resit their driving test every 3 weeks lunatics
ps you are required by law to stop at a red light not run throu it and hope the other traffic sees you and stops :)

No. but I do think anyone who gets more than 3 tickets or has an at fault accident in a 12 month period should be tested. That would make it more fair and not be based on "this amount of time has elapsed." or "You have reached age X."

No, it's something you never lose, as long as you are driving all the time. I live (and hope to get out of very soon) Arizona. When you get a license here, it is good till you turn 65--then, you need to go in and take an EYE test...that's it.

No, I would think it should be 5, and a defensive driving course included, with refresher causes every 5 years after the initial one - which should be compulsory for all new licences

Sorry, no.
I do think however that all new drivers should be made to take the test again after 2 years, to see if any of the skills they learned still exist! How many young drivers have you seen in high powered hatchbacks or sporty cars, who think the roads are all a part of Le Mans or Silverstone, and all us other drivers are competitors..........sorry, but I laugh when a spotty face in a GTI sits right up my exhaust, sis beside me at the traffic lights, revving his engine and edging his car forward, roars off at the lights, and then cannot bear to look at you as you pull up alongside him at the next set, laughing at him. Or the woman(sorry, lady) driver who sits in the right hand lane on an urban dual carriageway doing 30.....she has been told when she was learning, that if she is turning right, to get in the right hand lane well ahead of the turn......but not 3 miles ahead surely!! Driving is something that you get good at with practice, but you don't know how good or bad you are until you get caught by the Police speeding, or doing some other stupid thing. Good driving is getting to your destination safely without destroying anyone else on the road, and without speeding. COULD YOU PASS A TEST TOMORROW!!

Forklift drivers retake their test every 6 years (I think) so why not motorists?

Some have made the comment about people over 70 needing to retest. While I udnerstand that view point... what about drivers 16-18 who are -FAR- more likely to be involved in an accident (i.e. test them every year). Like it or not, testing based on age really amounts to age descrimination (by example listed above). This is why almost no states do this (too much flack from AARP... and old people vote).
It's more important to test the people who are in accidents or are cited for anything but states already do this. The problem with any type of testing is that people are simply on their best behavior for the test and then go right back to driving how they did. When asked about turn signals on a test we all respond correct... but do we all use them 100% of the time as required?
Testing is not a good answer to poor driving.
