No you don't. I owned a car for years and wasn't insured for it. My girlfriend was but it was parked outside my house. As long as it's taxed and tested it's ok.

Yes, your car must be registered to be on the street (parked or moving). To register annually, the car must be insured. They DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle), DOL (Department of Licensing) or what ever they call it in your state has a link to a master Insurance Database which enables them to know if you're insured or not. Once you end your insurance the Database is updated, and if you were then to face your annual renewal fees, you'll be asked to prove you do have insurance.
Note: You don't actually have to use an insurance company. You can post a BOND with the DMV. It's generally $30,000 USD. If you're insurance premiums exceed the interest you make off having that 30 grand somewhere else, then this option may be worth it to you.

Leaving it on the street, it is always a good idea to have insurance on it. In NY state if you did this without insurance, even if you leave it parked in the complex you live in in your own driveway-with no insurance, the town will take it away, and the landlord can have it towed away too legally. Same answers stand for not having plates on the vehicle. I hate NY!!!! But anywhere else in the free continental U.S. you shouldn't have any problems. Especially if you notify the local authorities that it is not being used, telling them that it is not junk lol. NY though??? I'd say good bye to your car.

It depends. If it's in a neighborhood where its always quiet, no cars driving around, and the police is never around checking the area/ If it is a crowded neighborhood, you have to put insurance to that car. What if someone crashes on your car? If you never use that car,i would recommend to park it in your garage.

As long as the car is not a broken down heap and it has current registration, I don't think you have anything to worry about. However, if it's registered as non-operable then there's a chance it could be towed away to minimize "blight".
Of course all of this would depend on local laws.

In the UK ifs its on a public highway then the vehicle must be Taxed, MOT'ED and Insured even to be parked on the side of the road.
One easy example why, someone has a accident by a parked car and they claim it is because of the way the car was parked it caused the accident say by being parked at a angle, so they want to make a claim against the owner of the parked car, so it needs insurance

It is an offence under section 147 of the Road Traffic Act to keep or operate a motor vehicle on the public highway without adequate insurance cover. So yes, you need a minimum of Third Party Only (TPO) insurance cover. Third Party Fire & Theft (TPF&T) gives extra cover if the car is stolen or damaged by fire, and fully comprehensive covers own damage in the event of an accident.

Yes it does. Most police cars and other agencies have number plate recognition which carry the full registeration details of all vehicles. No insurance means heavy fine, points on your licence and possibly the car crushed.

Answer is simple :any vehicle parked on or using the public highway which is classed as adopted must have insurance to be there legally .Full stop no if,s and buts.Adopted is those roads which are not classed as non adopted IE private roads which are usually found in new housing schemes and are clearly defined by a deliniating line usually kerbs or mono-block etc.

If it is parked in any public place it needs to be insured. If you keep it on private land then no, it doesn't need to be insured...if it gets stolen from there....your loss.
