He's right -- the deductible may go up and the cost of the insurance will probably go up too. Teenage girls are now the highest risk group when it comes to drivers, so insurance is going to be VERY expensive. There is no such thing as low-cost coverage for teenage drivers, so you're best bet is to stick with your Dad's plan since he'll get a multiple driver discount. Just remember that you don't have to pay the deductible unless you get in an accident, so it's not like you have to hand over $500.00 just so you can drive.

He's right, it will go up. One thing you can do to lower what you or your Dad will pay for insurance is enroll in a driver's education course. And some insurance companies will also give reduced rates if the teen makes good grades in school. You can try using Geico insurance, but that's only if your dad wants to switch from his current insurance company. Some people choose plans with higher deductibles because of other benefits of using that company.

Put the words "Low-cost car insurance & teenage drivers" in Yahoo and search, although, traditionally, there is no such thing. High risk, high cost....

I'm sorry there aren't too many options for low-cost coverage. Except if you get only 3rd party on it. But if the vehicle is worth something still, it's not a good idea.

When you get your learners permit, you are covered by your parents insurance at no extra rate increase. But, when you get your license, your parents rates will increase by about $35-$75 per month. As long as you are listed as a secondary driver under your parents policy, your rates will be tolerable. But if you try to get your own insurance under your name, you will be paying out the nose for insurance, in the range of $100-200/month, depending on the car and terms of the insurance you buy. Buy a cheap car by paying cash(no loan), register it in your parents name, list yourself as a secondary driver and put liability only insurance on the vehicle. When you turn 21, your rates will drop, and again when you turn 25. Call an insurance agent and just talk about the subject. They will try their best to get you the best rates and information.

I have a teenage son that's been driving for a couple of years. First of all, my insurance did NOT charge for a driver that only had a permit. They sure wanted to know about him because they want to make sure that they have all licensed drivers on the policy, even if that driver doesn't have a car. But it wasn't until he was actually licensed that my insurance went up. As for the deductible, your dad is choosing to raise that. It's his choice. I think what he's implying is that he going to have to make changes in order to make car insurance more affordable. Raising the deductible (what you pay if there's a claim) from $250 to $500 will help with the total insurance bill. I raised mine to $1000 when my son got his license. Everyone's advice is good. Try to stay on your dad's policy for the multi-car discount. If your a student, try to keep decent grades. If there's an older car involved, carry liability only if you can handle the risk. Shop around online. Lots of companies have instant quotes like Geico and Progressive. I ended up trying Metlife. I haven't experienced placing a claim yet, but they were cheap. My insurance went from about $1200 (Progressive) to over $3000 (Metlife) once my son was licensed. And I consider that a deal compared with other insurance companies. It can vary greatly. If you're working, offer to pitch in some each month. Good luck.

There is a site where you can compare a bunch of different insurance companies to find out which one will give you the best price. Most of them will give you quotes online so you don't even have to talk to anyone :).

Actually HE chooses his deductible, he probably said his payment will go up. There is no low-cost for teen drivers. Each insurance is different. Example: I have 2 teen girls on my insurance, one is $87 a month the other $91 (good student discount applies to one as the safedriver discount). The only thing to do is have all your insurance (house, car, health,, etc) in one comapny and that way you get a "line discoutn"

You may want to try getting a quote online. They have very low rates for teens. I am paying less than ½ of what I was before.

Take care,
