Can you park a car and take the insurance off?

Dan B	In most places, they car cannot even be parked on the street unless it is insured. Some places, it must be in the back yard or inside a garage (Phoenix) not viewable from the street. This is a city ordinance, not an HOA rule. I don't see any problem. How can they make you register and insure a car that doesn't run? The laws were written on the assumption that the car runs. On the one hand we can change the level of Car Cover you have. For instance, Comprehensive customers can reduce their cover to Third Party, Fire & Theft, or cheaper still to Fire and Theft Only. Fire & Theft Only is known as a laid-up policy and ensures that your vehicle is still protected in case a fire or theft happens while your car is on standby. To meet the terms of a laid-up policy you must keep your car in a locked garage, with no road use whatsoever and the Certificate of Insurance must be returned so that the premium can be adjusted to reflect the reduction in cover. foxychick24	If you have no loan or lease on the car, then you CAN cancel the insurance AND turn in the plates. Your insurance company, under SC state law, must notify SC DMV when an insurance policy is canceled, which if your plates are not turned in can result in suspension of drivers license and the vehicle plate/registration. If you would cancel your policy and turn the plates into the state, no claims would be covered (not even a tree falling on your car). Some insurance companies offer a suspension or withdrawn from use for your car, so it would suspend your liability coverage (you could NOT drive it) but the premium would be reduced so IF you have comp coverage on your car, that specific coverage would remain active (BUT CAN'T DRIVE THE CAR). For this specific suggestion you would need to call your insurance company to see if they offer this option. Please see this below directly from the SC DMV website: South Carolina Law requires that insurance companies notify the department when a liability insurance policy is canceled. The Notice of Cancellation of Policy (Form FR-4) is forwarded to the department and then forwarded to the owner. The owner is required to update the department with current insurance information or surrender the vehicle plate/registration. Failure of the owner to submit verification that the vehicle is currently insured or advise the department of the current disposition will result in the suspension of your driver license and the vehicle plate/registration. Mary L	You need to contact your insurer. If you cancel your insurance you will lose not only your collision and liability insurance but also comprehensive coverage, which is what would pay if the garage falls in on your car or burns down around it or a tornado would come. It may be better just to keep the insurance. One final note -- once you get the motor going, without insurance you wouldn't be able to test drive it around the block! Was this answer helpful to you? Old Man Dirt	There maybe an alternative to canceling the policy. It is called putting a cars insurance into suspension. Which means it is insured for comprehensive damage. But is not insured for liability (damage to another car). I have been able to do this with State Farm in two states, as I have cars that are for seasonal use only (one for winter and another for summer driving). If you are like me you would hate to incur the cost of getting the deductions reinstated on a car. Lets face it I get deductions taken off the cost of my insurance just because I have been insured with the same company for so long. So ask your agent about this. Warning- do not drive it on the roads or even park it on the public roads with this coverage, get it reinstated first. Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

Mark A	You have to take the car physically off the street and store it on private property. Call you insurance co. and cancel the policy. State laws vary, so call or visit your local dmv and ask what is needed to legally drop your insurance when the car is "down". Hope this helps! Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

*♥~Momma Bear~♥*	I'm not sure about in your state, but here in the state of Ohio if something has valid tags it has to have insurance whether it's running or not. Here, if you do have valid tags and your car isn't running, you can take the insurance off of it. But if you get audited by the BMV requesting proof of insurance for a certain date, you have to prove that your vehicle wasn't running as of a certain date which can begin to be a legal nightmare around here.
