Can you drive another uninsured car (just brought) on your own insurance?
|
I know in the EU the driver is insured not the car - which is not the case here in the UK....but I am puzzled about one aspect of UK law, which i think is another big scam.
Scenario: You just brought a bargain second hand car off a private seller. Its Sunday night at 10pm, the car is untaxed, uninsured and your 200 miles away from where you live.....How do you bring the car home?
Remember, recovery trucks won't take an untaxed car unless you pay them an extortionate price...plus, you have to find one in the first place.
So how do you buy the car?
Some are saying that you can't drive another car unless its insured itself by the owner with your own insurance...but thats stupid because then i won't be able to buy a second hand car off someone else which is 99% of the time uninsured....however I do understand the flip side of the coin where I would be able to drive 10-20 different uninsured, untaxed cars not in my name, that are covered by my personally owned 1 car (and save money....lol) Additional Details Hi Guys - thanks for your answers but am not convinced. Somethign is wrong here, think about it. Look at my scenario. How can I possibly insure and tax a car in the middle of a Sunday night when everything is closed?
Then for practical convenience and security, I must remove the car from the previous owner after exchanging the cash...It doesn't make sense at all, and if really you couldn't drive a car fullstop because that car itself isn't insured, then everyone is stuck and nobody can buy or sell any second hand car easily.
Sorry but it doesn't make sense...plus I'll let you into a secret - this once happened to me, and i drove the untaxed, uninsured car home - but carried my insurance cover note from my other car....it was inevitable that at some point the cops will stop me, they did, and asked me a few questions, and then let me go....was that my lucky day, and they were good cops - or did they do thier job wrong?

If you buy a car you must be insured for that vehicle. If someone else owns the car and they are fully comp, they can give you permission to drive that car,and you would be third party on their insurance. That is the law.

If you have fully comprehensive insurance on a car you own, this covers you to drive any other car on a 3rd party basis as long as it isn't owned by you.
If you are buying a car from somebody, the moment money has changed hands it actually belongs to you so this 3rd party clause does not apply.
You need to arrange insurance for any car you "own" before you drive it on the public highway. So, before you go to pick up a car you are buying, get the information about it first (reg number etc.) from the seller and either phone or go online to an insurance company and get it done in advance.
All insurance companies will cancel a policy within 14 days for no charge should you go to buy the car and the deal falls through, so if the worse happens it won't cost you anything.
You must have your own insurance policy in place for any car you own before you drive it on the road.
Yes the 3rd party thing is a loophole that allows you to drive any car not in your name, but if you drive an untaxed car you would be breaking the law.

The simple answer is that you must arrange for the vehicle to be brought home or insured before you drive it. The law is very clear on this. Possible scenarios are:
You bring a friend to drive it on his 'driving other cars' extension (make sure he has one!)
You hire a trailer and put the vehicle on the trailer and tow the trailer home.
Whilst I appreciate your annoyance, look at it from a different perspective - you currently have a Renault Clio and suddenly decide to buy a much more powerful car. You lose control on the way home and hit a pedestrian. Without insurance you are now bankrupt!

the law now states that the other car HAS to be insured and you cannot use another car to pick up your own car from the authorities or pound
you can add the car onto your insurance temporarily so you can drive it home but you will need it taxed

You cant drive without tax, when you buy the car you need to get the green part of the log book and go to a post office and buy tax, its also worth ringing your insurer and finding out leagally about the insurance, i would do your homework before you leave i.e where is the nearest post office etc

As far as insurance is concerned, it depends what your cover note says. Some cover notes quote the registration number of the car they apply to - in this case you cannot drive another vehicle until your insurance company is notified and technically you are in possession of new documents. However, some policies cover 'any vehicle the property of the policy-holder...' in which case a vehicle in the same category which belongs to you but is not notified to the company will be covered for third party risk only. Such a cover note could also be used to obtain a tax disc for that vehicle. It is ALWAYS an offence for an unlicensed vehicle to be on the public highway - no exceptions!

This is what I would do:
Get it insured first in your name.
Ask the seller to tax it and you will pay them for it when you collect the car.
If you are picking it up on a Sunday night, do the above before then.

In the circumstances you outline you can neither drive or tow it. It must be trailered or otherwise carried. Simple as that.
Either that or you get the vendor to tax and MoT it and arrange cover with your insurers.

You need to phone your insurance company & get insured on it yourself & buy tax for it too - you can't drive it 200miles without doing this first!

In your scenario - then it is entirely your own fault if you cannot get the car home. Knowing that there was no tax or insurance, you would need to get the car trailered home.
You are not allowed to drive a car on the roads without tax. There are no circumstances where this is ok.
So again in your scenario you cannot do it.
If your insurance allows it (not all policies do) then you can drive another car on your insurance.
When you got caught previously you were lucky, they could have impounded the car for no tax if they had felt like it.
