Erm, I think you can. Do you have cover already (for another car?) if so, it might be worth giving them a bell and asking them, or just let them know.
I don't see how else you'd get your car home if you couldn't have cover for a certain amount of time when buying another car.
If in doubt, couldn't you get someone whose fully comp (and able to drive any vehicle) get it home for you?

If you already have insurance on another car, you should be fine. In most states, you have 30 days to add the car to your insurance policy. Just keep your bill of sale, so you can prove when you bought the car.

If you bought it from a dealership they'll cover you getting it home usually - ask them about it. Often a private seller will still have insurance on it as well - you can check that out with them.
Of course, if home's not far, you can risk it - drive carefully, and if you get pulled over tell the cop you just bought the car and are transporting it home.
Otherwise, call your insurance company before you drive it home and get it covered. You don't need proof of insurance to HAVE insurance on it - although cops will give you a ticket without the proof (if they pull you over).

It depends what kind of cover you have on your original insurance. Most policies say that you are able to drive any vehicle with the owner's consent. This would apply if you have bought the vehicle and are driving it yourself. To be on the safe side, a quick call to your insurers would clear up the query, it might be that you will have to pay a few more pounds, but, having contacted your insurers, this would be instant and it will be fine for you to drive home.

A lot of policies have a "drive any vehicle not belonging to them, with the owner's permission" so you could argue it still belongs to the other guy until the car is sitting on your driveway.

If you already have car insurance on another car, the company that you have a policy with will normally cover the new car even without being informed first, up to a reasonable amount of time. But if you have no car now, there is no company that will pay the claim should you have an accident, so its only good if you are currently paying an auto insurance premium. Don't take the chance, just call your insurance agent and get a verbal binder on the new car until you can process the paper work.

there are ALOT of answers here for you, but what every single one of them forget to mention is that:
if you have another car that is currently insured, the coverage will extend over to your new car for 30 days, BUT you have to make sure that you have comprehensive AND collision on the current policy, because this is what your dealer is concerned about.
If you have only liability on your current policy, you will have to either purchase only comp/collision coverage from the dealer for 1 month, OR add your new car into the insurance. The liability WILL automatically extend over.
You have 30 days to add your new car, before the finance company on your car loan forceplaces insurance on the car (which is ALOT more expensive).

If you already have insurance for another vehicle then in most cases the coverage will extend to the newly acquired vehicle for 30 days or so. But you'll have to notify your insurance company so they can grant you a temporary insurance card. Also, if you have bought a car from a dealership they usually will not let you leave the lot without proof of insurance. If you bought the car from a private party, check to see if they still have insurance on the car. Their insurance will cover you until you get the car home. Then you can get your own insurance.

No... You have to have insurance before you leave the lot, Say you have another car and you have insurance on that car, then its ok.
I and my mom went to go buy a car for me and I had no insurance. Since my mom co-signed for me and had insurance on her car it was ok for me to leave the lot but if she didn’t co-sign for me then I had to get insurance through the dealership right there and then before leaving with the car.

If you were unlucky enough to be in an accident who would pay for any damages ??
Only way is to get insured first or get it towed to your house.

No. You have to arrange an insurance policy before you drive your car anywhere. Some dealerships/ car companies offer a temporary insurance offer so that you can get it home, but you have to check with them. It's illegal to drive a car without insurance. (And even more risky if you've just bought your car, wouldn't want a crash!)

I sold cars for 3 years and every customer had to have insurance before the car left the lot. Now if you have insurance on a car that you traded in, then the insurance for that car will carry over for, I believe 24 hours. Now, personally, I had a 98 Ram Air Trans Am that I purchased a while back. I purchased the car and had to go to the insurance office to get insurance before I could pick it up. I wrote a check, got the insurance, picked up the car and totaled it in 10 hours. The next day, I called the insurance company and they gave me a full refund, the car dealership's insurance paid the car off and I got my down payment back to buy a Mustang.

To consolidate this for you, in the UK there must be third party insurance cover in place for YOU to drive THAT car from the instant it goes on the road. The previous owner's insurance does not cover you, nor does your insurance on another car.
You have three choices
1) Get your insurance in place before you go and complete the deal.
2) Get the previous owner to deliver it to you before you complete the deal.
3) Have it trailered.
Don't push your luck and try to drive it home without insurance. If you're caught the courts view this very seriously, let alone what would happen if you have an accident . . .

If you're already insured with a company for another car, then you can just ring them and they should issue immediate cover. If you're not, then you HAVE to get insurance cover before you drive it home. What happens if you run over or kill someone? Most companies will issue immediate temporary cover so there's no excuse.
