In order to insure a vehicle you have to be the titled owner of it.

If your friend is the owner - she can get a policy in her name and list you as a driver on her policy.

No I had the same problem two weeks ago and had to become the registered owner of the car.

I always insure our car and it was always me as registered keeper. However, my husband who drives a company car decided to buy a new family car and put himself down as the owner but when I came to insure it I had to become the registered owner by fillling in the form on the reg documents and sending it off to Swansea. That's the way it works.

My husband is the named driver on the policy so never built up his no claims discount. However, most insurance companies make provision for the named driver to take into account his accident free motoring on his company car, but as I was insuring the car in my name I had to be the registered keeper to make the insurance legal.

the only way that you can do this is if your friend is also insured on the car as well as you x

In this instance, no.

The registered keeper would have to insure the car and put you on as a named driver.

The insurance company will always ask if you are the registered keeper on the application.

In the UK the insurance must be in the name of the "user", to cover this the majority of insurance companies insist that this is the registered keeper.

They are used to most "flanking" manoeuvres to gain cheaper cover.

You can but you may have to pay more as the majority of insurance companies insist that you are the registered keeper.

I have had this problem when I was driving cars that were on long term hire. I ended up having to pay about 25% more than if the car had been registered in my name.
