Advice on driving lessons?
I am a diaster when it comes to driving tests, i've failed 5 tests over 15 years and havent taken a test or sat in a car since 1999. I really want to pass my test this year, my last instuctor said my driving is ok and i dont particulary have a confidence problem but i go to pieces on the day of the test. Any advice?

take the test as you would with your instructor... dont think of the examiner as an examiner,,, just picture your intructor sat next to you..
if that dont work,,, take a brown envelope,, stick some money in it and hand it over to the examiner... that should do the trick

You have to focus on the problem, which is not your driving, it is your reaction to the test instructor. There are ways of getting over this - if you can afford it just keep on putting in the test as often as you can - five times over the past fifteen years sounds like you are leaving large gaps in between taking tests.
Second, you can take a round-about-way of takling the problem - do a short course (two-Five days) in presentation skills or something like that, so you can learn trick to hide your nerves, and get used to having to demonstrate something while other people are looking on in judgement.
Third, you can try and just ignore the test instrucor - try your best to image he is not there.
There is sure to be a trick which is good for you to use, ask some of your friends for idea.

Failed 5 times? I believe, as does Clarkson, that anyone who fails 3 times isn't cut out for driving.

I'd advise getting a test as early in the morning as possible, the first of the day, so you don't have time to worry about it all day beforehand. Get up, have a proper breakfast and just go for it. If your driving really is OK then you'll pass eventually. I'd try to find a friend or family member who can drive and get yourself insured in their car so you can have extra lessons and practice. Family members can be your harshest critics. If you can drive with a partner sitting next to you nagging all the time without getting hot and bothered, then you should be able to manage an examiner. Perhaps you should try one of those psychology tricks and try to imagine your examiner naked or something so they don't appear as frightening? It sounds like a lot of it is in your mind.

Well, since you have taken the test 5 times, you should know what is on the test. Have someone you trust ride with you a few times and act as an officiant (test judge person). YOu should be able to find somewhere online that shows the check off list for your state's drivers license exam. Wait until you pass it with an 85 or better. That way if your nerves get the best of you on that day, you still have some leeway

If you were in Italy I would probably tell you to just bribe the instructor...but, I guess, I will just advice you to be relaxed and think positive...

Find a instructor who will take you around the test routes in the weeks before the test so you know exactly what to expect. Try to treat the test like a lesson and set yourself the target of demonstrating how good you really can drive. Don't tell people its your test as you don't want people reminding you for days before and building up your nerves(especially as everyone has a massively exaggerated horror story about their test to tell), if you start thinking about it; mentally say stop and think about something else straight away. Get a test in the morning so you wont be stewing all day before hand. Hope this helps a little.
