You would have to study how to make a ton of money and then contribute it to someone who becomes president, because that is how most of them are chosen. Except for the representatives to a few key countries, Ambassadors are mostly figureheads. The professional foreign service officers do most of the work but rarely get elevated to be ambassador.

Anything you are interested in, but a multi-disciplinary major such as International Relations will help. You will need exposure to political science, economics, languages, etc. The foreign service exam covers everything you can think of, even literature and computers.
