I am British born and bred, but I have trouble accepting that a bunch of little islands thousands of miles away are British.

Argentina does have a strong historical claim to the Falklands / Malvinas, despite British possession by occupation. Their claim is stronger than Kuwait's claim to territory taken from the Ottoman Empire, ie Iraq, (By the US / France and Britain). However, if you look at world history, territory has been claimed by force, over many centuries. Most nations have won or lost territory, in wars. Similarly, individuals all over the globe have lost land to aggressive victors whose claim is now un-opposable!

Argentina tried to take back the islands - and lost. Guess that makes the territory British, still by occupation and by victory. The only way to get it back is to be victorious in battle for it, or to hope that Britain gets another Prime Minister that is willing to give it back, as Mrs Thatcher was trying to do just before you decided to help yourself!!!

If you are lucky, nobody will find oil there and you may find it a skirmish between Britain and Argentina - again. If however someone finds oil, then expect Bush to get in on the act too.

I'll tell you what.
Hand Argentina back to the indigenous Indian population, however many are left, then send all the descendants of Europeans back to Europe.
We will then happily give the Falklands to the newly reinstated rulers of Argentina.
Seems a fair deal to me.

but as long as Argentina is ruled by the descendants of European colonists, you have no more right to the Falklands than Britain does and the inhabitants of the islands prefer Britain. Mind you, anybody aware of what life has been like in Argentina would too.
Cheers, Steve.

The Falkland Islands were first colonised by British settlers - as you are aware the Military dictatorship of Argentina attempted to occupy the islands against the will of the people who live their - a British task force retook the islands despite being out numbered by the Argentine forces who were operating much closer to their home base - the Argentine forces were forced to accept a surrender - their leaders had involved them in an illegal war - although the people of the UK or the Falklands have no bitterness against the Argentintine nation. Just leave them alone or you might just get more of the same

The Falkland Islands belong to UK. We rightfully took it like India, Hong Kong, Palestine, Malaya, Sarawak and North Borneo, Sabah, Cyprus, Ghana, Nigeria and Somaliland, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Kenya, Zanzibar, Tanganyika, The Gambia, Lesotho (formerly Basutoland), Botswana (formerly Bechuanaland), Swaziland, West Indies Federation, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, and many others.
It’s rightfully ours!!!

Argentina has no claim to the Falkland islands, it was a continuation of a Spanish claim. You tried and failed to take it back.

The Argentinian claim is very weak.

It was the British, not the Spanish, who colonized it. And since this weak claim was inherited, it hasn't become any stronger.

Give it up, it never was yours to begin with. Spend the energy to fix the problems in your own country.

Well, judging by your question you've made your own mind up. What are you asking us for?

By the way, the people who live there think they're British, so you can probably stuff 'Islas Malvinas' up yer bum.

Argentina is not wanted by the people there, and it's the people that matter, not the land. And if you fancy another argument a la 1982 over it, the result will be the same.

Name says it all. Falkland Islands are British - Malvinas are Argentine. Depends where you live. Having said that all those who actually live on the Falkland Islands consider themselves British and we did lose a lot of British lives helping them to remain British.

Get over it. You lost - we won. Now move on.
