Those who say you must brush up on your spelling and grammar are correct. The Civil Service Exam includes sections on spelling and grammar. Without a good score on those sections you will not pass the exam.
If you choose to apply for a clerical job, the requirement is (at a minimum) O Level English and Mathematics.

It could be useful if you first learned how to spell a bit better and/or keyboarding. Eng Lang IS important, whatever example you learned from school. Best wishes and good luck. You need it.

I should try doing a study package on proof reading and punctuation first. I take it that customs and exile are the bit that deal with deportations ?

It is H.M. Customs and Excise or Immigration. You need to know what the career is called before you investigate it.

You need to sit the Civil Service Exams and then if you pass say that you want the Immigration Service or Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise (they joined together a couple of years ago).
Before that though I would brush up your English!
