I find the level of ignorance amongst so many here and elsewhere astounding.I am not that concerned about Harry,he is clearly not the sharpest tool in the box but when I see people write that there is an equivalence between the term p@ki and jock or brit/yank etc..I

am genuinely shocked at the level of ignorance amongst many UK citizens. It would not be possible for someone of non asian origin growing up in the UK over the past thirty years to understand what it means to be called a p@ki but it should not preclude them from listening to those who have had this term spat at them for years and accept that there experience is the one that matters.

Being called a jock a taff or a ginge may be offensive to some and being called tubby or lardarse may be taunting, mocking, offensive or all of the above but how many of these people have had that slogan daubed on their homes on their cars and in some cases on them? How many welsh or scottish people do you know that have had petrol poured through their letterbox simply because they happened to be Scottish? How many times have you heard of a ginger person being beaten to a pulp for no other reason than being ginger? How many Scottish or Welsh people do you know that have to look around to see who may see them get out of their car knowing that if the car is linked to them they may very likely return to that car to find the words taff or jock carved into the paintwork?

How many times have you seen political parties appear whose core issue is the removal of yanks from these shores? How many times have you seen marches of thousands calling for the expulsion of ginger haired people? (see:BNP/NF amongst others...)

Growing up me and my family experienced arson, criminal damage, verbal and physical assault as a regular occurence this expereince resonates with most asian people growing up in the UK through the 70's,80's,90,s the common theme in almost all of these attacks was the perpetrators resort to spit out the word p@ki with the sort of vehemence and hatred you would never hear given to any other word.

Growing up at school I would hear other children openly talking about going paki bashing and was on the receiving end of this popular pastime on a number of occassions I dont think I have ever heard the term taffy or paddy bashing not to say that people from these communities never came under attack but there was not a established term such as p@ki bashing which again brings us to the unique (in the UK) nature of the term p@ki..

I remember when I was 8 years old, playing in park when 6 or 7 young men approached the rounabout on which i was playing with my friends they said everyone off but not the p@ki,they then each grabbed a bar of the roundabout around the circumference and began to push the roundabout quicker and quicker,I remember holding on for dear life but in the end I couldnt hold on any longer I flew some distance and landed in gravel, having it pushed beneath the skin of my nose cheeks, palms and knees.I was a bloody mess and what i remember most of all was them shouting F off back to ur own country u p@ki scum and laughing...

You see I was still an 8 year old kid and an 8 year kid bleeding profusely would in most people engender sympathy and concern BUT this is my point the term p@ki had literally de-humanised us to those whose hatred grew around this word.It was okay to consider burning a whole family of p@kis alive in their homes because they were nothing more than animals or vermin...strange how smelly paki was in such popular useage reffering to the then considered disgusting stench of curry and how that same stink is eaten with such gusto today.

Things havent changed as much as we might like to think but my father does recall signs outside pubs when he first was invited to this country saying 'no dogs,no indians'.

So you see the word p@ki to you may just be that a word but for those that have been at the receiving end of that word for most of their lives (usually accompanied with spittle) it is far,far more and you may not be able to understand that and lucky you for that being the case but please do not tell me how to feel when I hear the word and whatever you do please, please dont equate the word with brit or yank etc...there is no parity whatsover.

Of course not, it is pc gone mad. Jocks, Micks and Taffys have taken this in good spirits for generations. I often refer to myself as a "Brit", and are proud to do so.
This stupidity has been concocted by those who seek to silence us, the very ones who tell us that others will be offended by any display of "Britishness". Utter garbage in my opinion, it is the powers that be who wish to destroy our culture and heritage under the guise of multiculturalism. If we were not such a great place to be no bugger would come here!.
The very thing they seek, they use it to divide us, wake up people.
Do the media really believe we are that stupid? Would not the individual concerned have complained at the time, and made a fortune to boot?
"Racist" is the most overused word in our vocabulary just as our rulers hoped, when you silence speech, you ultimately control thought.
In response to another poster, I as a caucasian personally abhor the N word, but find it ironic that black people, particularly in the US, use it freely amongst their own race.
We need to lighten up and stop listening to our rulers as to what we SHOULD find offensive and what really is.
Having read more posters comments, I see that pc and government brainwashing is having the desired effect.
Those who cannot differentiate between what is truly offensive and what one is being "told" is acceptable, are missing the point in my very humble opinion.
I instinctively know when my language or terminology could be perceived as offensive or derogatory, and where it will be accepted, I do not need to be made aware of the difference.
It is commonly known as good manners and having respect for others, something our rulers think they know better than us.
At least that is what they would have us believe, along with all the other b******t they expect us to swallow.
A for instance... A new neighbour is a pain in the bum, I'm totally peed off, do I complain, of course, why not?
My new neighbour is of a different race, do I complain, of course not, because I will be accused of being a "racist".
Never mind that the neighbour is anti-social and a complete pain, I will think thrice before even dealing with it. .
Get the picture??
Do I blame my neighbour for being of a different race, of course not, any race can be a pain in the bum, but my natural response to unacceptable behaviour is now being dictated to by pc.
This is happening right across the board, and is the very reason why criminals now have more rights than the law- abiding..
Government wants us to feel powerless and defenceless, they seek to dictate how we think and feel.
So carry on, let nanny take charge, work by rote, do not have independent thought, allow your thinking to take second place, you will no longer be an individual but an instrument of collectivism.
Big Brother will take care of you, pmsl.
Harry a racist, is the Pope a Protestant?

The abbreviation Paki acquired offensive connotations in the 1960s when used by British tabloids to refer to subjects of former colony states in a derogatory and racist manner. In modern British usage "Paki" is typically used in a derogatory way as a label for all South Asians, including Indians, Afghans and Bangladeshis. To a lesser extent, the term has been applied as a racial slur towards Arabs and other Middle Eastern-looking groups who may resemble South Asians. During the 60's many emigrants were also dubbed as "black" to further segregrate them from the white community. Some would say such a division still exists in parts of England.

In recent times there has been a trend by second and third-generation British Pakistanis to reclaim the word. The word has been turned into a keepsake for the young British Pakistani community that is not acceptable for someone outside the community to say it, including Indians and Bangladeshis.

Legend in your own mind!
Everything is racist anymore. Americans will someday get pissed if you call them Ameri's or just Am's. I get mad if you call me white. White is white. I'm sort of peach-tan, but what the hell?
Hey peach-tan dude! Hey peach-tan boy!
I'm sick of using special terms for certain groups and you can say this, but can't say that. You can get your @ss raped by this or that and it's OK because his ancestors were oppressed by your ancestors.
I guess I'm racist anymore and could care less. I judge someone by the individual and NOT by their color or ethnicity. My friends are my friends regardless of what they look like and if they demand I say they are afro-pakistan-polishi-indo-peachey then f**kem..go find some other friend. I'll call you Fred or Joe or whatever your name is and not what your special interest group representative says you are.

A lot of people here say that it is racist because its used abusively or derogatory, but doesn't mean that the word is derogatory, if that is the case then brit is just as offensive, it is just that some people have used it to be negative. so i don't think the word should be avoided, because that doesn't remove the racism behind it. they could be pc and call them a pakistani and still have the same malice behind it. i could understand if it was like the word Ni**er as that is heavily connected with black slavery but paki, is just a shortening of pakistani why should it matter?

Yes, 'Brit' is the shortening of British.

'Paki' is the shortening of Pakistani.

But the fact is that 'Brit' is not generally considered derogatory to British people, 'Paki' is to Pakistanis. As the first poster pointed out, you probably knew that already, in fact I wager you don't use it in company you don't know offline. So, well done, now you can feel like a really big man for being brave enough to 'not be racist' on the internet [round of applause].

But despite your protestations I certainly consider you a racist for using such a term and, you know what, I really hate racists, so maybe its just best not to use it (discretion and valour and all that)?

I am a christian 1/2 paki and black, and I think this is the stupidest thing I've ever heard! When I heard he made an inappropriate comment, I thought maybe, "typical spoiled white kid mocking black people". But now, this is absolutely enough credit.
I think that my assumption of what the comment was about was more offensive than him calling someone a Paki.
I completely agree that this is blown way out of proportion. I have a 14year old cousin who calls himself "Pak Man" on myspace.
My dad (who's black) jokes and calls my sister and I "black paks".
Ex: my dad speaking to my mom, "Liz, have you heard from your black paks?"

Lol so this is hardly offensive.
This is about as important as Bradgelina dissing Ryan Secreast.

because the hate fuelled morons are sensitive. SO BLOODY SENSITIVE.... they can chuck acid in the faces of school girls, they can stone their wives to death for showing an ankle and beat them for daring to wear any thing but what they force them to wear. they can cut the throats of animals and watch them bleed to death in slow agony and blind terror, NO PROBLEM....but call em a Paki and they sit down and sob their little hearts out. if they want respect then perhaps they need to earn it. i dont like animals being tortured in my country. i thought we had laws agaist that?....makes you wonder how the RSPCA have the nerve to ask for funds, but can justify Halal.....how exactly does that work then?????

People I know from an Asian background have told me that the term Paki is nearly always used in an abusive manner. Especially when their ancestors were from India, or Sri Lanka.

Too many who insist on using the term treat it as an insult.

Those called it say they find it offensive, so courtesy dictates to me, I won't use it.

People who want to use this term, tend to use it to describe anyone of South Asian background - they don't mean it as a term of endearment. This means that those who use it harmlessly and without malice, as I believe Prince Harry did, get wrongly accused of racism.

But where is the fault? With those who don't like being called Paki? Or with those who have tainted the word by using it as an insult?

And yes, when you were called "You F***ing Taffy G*t" that was racist - and would have been if the term Welsh had been used. Why should you accept your nationality being used as an insult?

ygt652002: Do you really believe that schools across the country abandoned chalk and blackboards (that is their name), for marker pens and whiteboards because blackboards are racist? Do you really believe that?

Because everyone else thinks it's to do with visibility of the writing, plus a blackboard can't double as a projector screen!

I always thought they where. what can you call them without the PC crowd getting all rowdy. It is their short name so I can't see the problem.
I have noticed that other Asians hate being called Paki but that's mostly because they aren't from Pakistan and hate them with vengeance.
You can't win in this country so why bother being PC in the first place. If everyone just woke up and stopped all this nonsense the UK might still have a chance.

Has anyone asked what the Pakistani person (notice the PC there) views on this present situation are? Perhaps it has been on the news and I missed it, but he did not seem all that upset in the video.

Also, allot of what Prince Harry said to the others was blanked out or spoken over, perhaps he said 'This is five knuckle shuffle Fred and this is lanky Larry, this is Shorty, Scotty and Fat boy slim. Over here we have Spot, Ugly Jo and Baby cakes Bobby. The list could be endless......

Betawulf
Paki COULD be viewed as simply an abbreviation of Pakistani, and in itself the term is not racist (racism is discrimination based on race, not name-calling). However if the term is used in a derogatory sense then the implied negative opinion based on nationality IS racist. It's like someone saying 'oh, he's one of those 'british', isn't he' - There's nothing actually discriminatory in the sentence, but the mood behind it is.
In the case of Prince Harry, I don't think anything that offensive was intended, really. From what i've heard the guy didn't take offense, and Harry didn't seem to mind him either, so its a bit overblown to call it racism. He used a term that is commonly derogatory, though. It's a bit like calling someone 'fatty' in an affectionate way. Not a nice word, but not being nasty.
