you need to apply to the IND on a spouses visa it lasts 2 years then you can claim indefinate leave to remain after that. Once you have Indefinate leave to remain you can then apply for a british passport.
www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/ go here to get the form you need which is an FLR (M) I think!!!

No it doesn't. It can take a while to get the papers through and apply properly but I think you're given a short period of time to do this - around 3 months.
Look at the home office website and they'll help you with this.

It looks like you will be able to retain your American citizenship, also. There seems to be a ceremony where you swear an oath. This site has a ton of data.
A U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth.U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship.

Youll have a much better chance of becoming a British citizen if you are an illegal immigrant and preferably a criminal with malicious intent to live solely off social security and crime. Anyone decent: forget it!

In most European countries, at least until the end of WW2 females who married men from another country were taken off the records of their birth country and were immediately carried as citizens of their husband's country.
This went on for years but many American women objected to loosing their American citizenship, so now American women marrying foreigners can now claim duel citizenship. They di not automatically loose their American citizenship.

Don't know about British citizenship, but if you are a British Citizen, you forfeit your American citizenship since Americans can't be citizens of other countries & retain their U.S. citizenship.

no - as in every country, you need to show some papers and get made into a citizen - rather than automatically become one. It doesn't take long in the UK though. Contact your local immigration office, or even just the city council office, they should be able to help you further.
