How come the United States has military bases and U.S. Embassies in several different countries?

alphadeltahotel	We have military bases in places that are supposed to be strategic for security reasons. A U.S. Embassy represents the interests of American citizens in a foreign country. We have them in every country that we have formal diplomatic relations with. That means we do not have them in places like Iran, Cuba, or North Korea. The head of the embassy is the ambassador. He or she is our chief diplomatic representative in that country. The embassy can be contacted by citizens when abroad for help in emergency matters like: evacuation in time of crisis, replacing a lost or stolen passport, contacting relatives at home, if one is arrested, etc. Most countries do have them all over the place just like us. parrothead_usn	The embassy serves as a so called "home-port" for the foreign dignitaries to the assigned countries. It keeps political figureheads in the country, so when needed, they are available...vice having to wait for them to arrive. Northwestern Washington DC is a haven for Embassies to the US. As for military, If all of you resources are stored in one location, you are prepared for nothing anywhere...if you spread your forces, and station them on allied turfs, you are prepared for uprisings on a global scale... Call it a meek attempt at global domination, or call it preparedness...the rest of the free world calls it 911 for humanity. IceCube	Basic tasks for Embassy is to promote friendly relations and protect the national interests of the country it represents. I think same goes with the military bases. bigross86	Embassies and Consulates are an age old thing. It used to be that Ambassadors and Consuls General were the mouth of the government they represented. An Embassy's or Consulate's land is considered to be the land of the Country the Embassy belongs to, for example: A person seeking asylum at the US Embassy in Tel Aviv cannot be touched by Israeli law enforcement once he steps foot on the Embassy's land. Same for Consulates and an Ambassador residence. Most, if not all countries, have Embassies and Consulates all over the world, in countries they have friendly relations with, such as the US and England, and countries they're not so friendly with, such as the US and the former USSR. The Embassy is the location for all a foreign tourist needs when away from his home country, be it trouble with the law, or a lost passport, the Embassy usually does it's best to help out. Embassies are also in charge of diplomatic relations between two countries, usually with messages from one leader to another being passed by the Ambassadors. People who work in Embassies and Consulates as a general rule have Diplomatic Immunity, meaning they can't be charged for crimes they commit in the country they're currently in. They can, however, be declared Persona Non Grata, or Unwanted People, and deported. Consulates, and Consuls, are in charge of affairs between the countries, as well as trade and other friendship benefits and the like. As for Army bases, the US doesn't have them in all countries, only countries which the US has an agreement with, or countries that have requested US troop presence within their borders Was this answer helpful to you? ohiofirefighter42	Most countries have either an embassy in all countries or have an agreement with another friendly nation to handle thier affairs for them....as far as military bases some of these were in U.S. territories...others were put there with the agreement of the host nation because of treaties we signed to protect them. Avner Eliyahu R	I think most countries in the world have embassies all over like the US. As for military bases, however, it is scandalous, and indicates that the US prepares for more wars of aggression. I can't understand why Bulgaria and Romania spend so much money for building US military bases there-there are many homeless dogs there, and it is more humane to care about them then build bases for US troops. ALASPADA	Most countries do have embassies or consulates in other countries, unless it is some enemy. We have bases based on treaties and our need for quick action in national security matters. In some countries do to their importance or size (dept of state mission is also to serve US citizens in those countries) we have embassy in capital and consulates in other cities> GO to Dept of State web site and you will see a list of all our embassies and consulates. We also have embassies at major international headquarters like the European Union in Brussels. Political reasons some time (as I mentioned earleir ) limit where we have embassy. For a long time we had one in Taiwan but not China. Also for a long time we had no embassy in Vatican City (because of the problem of it being the HQ of the Catholic Church basically).
