No, all you need is enough to buy the visa. Most foreign countries only presume the rest.
This usually changes if you are trying to stay for a long period of time though but if you are only traveling then it doesn't matter

Usually not. But it depends on what kind of travel. If you wish to live in another country or work there (especially outside the EU) you may be required to show proof of funds if you need a visa. The visa free zones that you're going to as a tourist you generally don't need one ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_passport ) but it's a good idea to have some money in the back or some money saved away if you're just going for a holiday (rarely do you need to show proof for the visa free countries).

The UK does not require residents setting off to travel abroad to take any particular sum of money with them.
Some countries have regulations requiring foreign tourists to prove that they can afford to fund themselves during their stay and to get home again. These will presumably apply to visiting UK citizens in the same way that they do to others.

Certainley not just to travel, but if you want to retire to Thailand you have to have one of the following,1/ 50 years old and single 800,000 Baht in the bank, or 40,000 Baht income per month. Or if married to a Thai 400,000 Baht in the bank. It should be the same in the UK but sadly the UK government are to stupid to think of it.
