Do you think the UN does anything?
What is the general consensus on the UN? I think they are there simply to make the bad guys look like good guys...scape goat on the US (who they are just as evil as) and increase the world economy with their country being major beneficiary.

Hmmm let me take a moment and laugh at this question............Okay for one thing the UN does not serve any benefit to the US it hinders it. The UN does do something it causes wars hence the war between isreal and lebannon. For three years now the UN has been sitting at the border between the two countries and watched kidnappings, rouge missiles, and other terrorist acts against isreal and they have done nothing to help the lebanon government. Anyways read the UN report....And as far as the UN blaming Isreal for the rocket on a UN outpost....Think about it why the hell don't the UN soilder freaking protect their 10 mile perimeter from hezbollah knowing possible rockets may come their way during okay get this WAR....oh wait the UN does do something suport war lords, rape, steal, hide, and give people like you a reason to ask this lame question and calling the US evil is pretty lame as well maybe we should move the UN offices to your country maybe they'll benifit.

The UN just sit back and watch. They help out here and there, but nothing much really. For instance, take for example the genocide which took place in Rwanda a decade ago. All the UN did was evacuate their own people out of the country, and left the people they were supposed to protect fend for themselves.

The UN could have been a very mighty organism, but their hands are tied because of the veto right countries like Russia, the US and the UK have. This veto right was given to these countries as they would otherwise have refused to take part. As long as this veto right exists, the UN can do nothing else but watch the suffering and undergo bad treatment from nations who feel they have the right to take "law" into their own hands. They have no real might until all these big countries are of the same opinion, which never happens.

No, it is basically, an impotent white elephant bureaucracy. Ideally, in a perfect world, it would help keep order and justice for all. The trouble is, no one can agree what that is or what is most important. You have terrorist nations and nations with poor, if not horrible human rights records, in charge of committees and boards that are supposed to monitor and check those problems, so it's an oxymoron. Realistically, no one is benefitting from the actions or in-actions of anything the UN has been involved in lately except the bad guys. Even their so-called "Peace-keepers," and/or observers run as soon as the bullets start....How can they keep peace like that?

I love the idea of the UN. I'm a moderator for the Model United Nations club at the school where I teach, but I think they have become impotent. Interestingly, last year we were researching the Darfur situation for our MUN conference. I found an old statement by the US ambassador to the UN about 20 years ago or more. He was explaining why the US did not sign the UN resolution on Darfur. (Remember this was 20 or more years ago.) He said that it was a white-wash so that the UN could say they were addressing the issue but were actually doing nothing. He said that if a stronger resolution were not passed, Darfur would become worse and worse until it could no longer be avoided. I guess he was a prophet. In the meantime, the resolution was passed and it made the signing countries feel good about themselves and pat themselves on the back, but obviously, it accomplished nothing. Meanwhile, the US was once again vilified for not signing the resolution. Go figure.

The UN is like the League of Nations in the World Wars. No collective security action taken.

The only thing the UN do is provide AID as far as i know not military action.

No, the basic premise of the UN, like the failed League of Nations before it - which failed because the US did not join the league after submitting it to the world, is to help maintain the peace. Technically, they are not supposed to intervene into the internal affairs of the member states that comprise the UN, nor those that do not join the UN either. of course, people crossing into foreign borders changes that.
But, sadly, with all organizations there are those that have their own agendas. You are right if you are suggesting that the UN should not be glorifying the persons that took the first shots in an international conflict. you are not necessarily right if you are suggesting that the US is made into a scapegoat for numerous of the world's problems (the country does well enough on its own).
As for money. The UN really can't do a lot for their own countries except advocate for assistance, in any way and form that they can acquire it. There are a lot of poor countries in the world, for whatever reason that may be, but there are reasons that these countries are helped too, because it can increase the GNP of those countries doing the helping. Especially in the area of military equipment.
I like the UN, especially the idea of the UN. But there isn't much that can be done when the premise of the UN is individual nations joining together to ensure a peaceful future - every state is still autonomous, and individualistic. This is the reason the Security Council Veto is so powerful.

The UN consumes money and makes speeches. Your writing is terrible. It looks as if you're calling my USA evil, and if that's the case, you need to back off, son.
