Having two passports assumes that you are a dual citizen of another country. You can "possess" two passports but you cannot travel on both. It's legal in the U.S. to possess two passports although the U.S. government doesn't officially recognize dual citizenship. Another tip is that it may be cheaper in some cases to travel on a foreign passport as opposed to a U.S. one (assuming you're an American). For example, a Sri Lankan tourist visa costs about $150 for U.S. citizens but only $15 citizens of Ireland. (Of course, I know Sri Lanka is not a common tourist destination for most Americans, but I'm only using this as an example).

Turkey is another example of this difference in visa fees. A three-month multiple-entry visa-on-arrival for American citizens costs $20. For Irish citizens, it's $15. It's a savings of $5....but, the visa issued to Americans is multiple-entry, whereas the visa for Irish citizens is only single-entry, and only valid for one month.

Good luck.

Yes, but pressure from the U.S. has pretty well dried up the list of countries where you could get your second passport. It used to be relatively simple, but not any longer... at least not if you're an American.

You can have as many passports as countries are willing to recognize your claim to their citizenship. In addition, each country generally has the three classifications of passports: A regular passport, an official/work passport and a diplomatic passport. Some countries even distinguish between an internal passport and an international passport for their citizens.
