So you are getting ripped off by renewing your driving license and your passport... well dont bother. sell the car and use public transport, and dont renew your passport and go on holiday in the UK, problem solved.
You sound like a whiner. two questions exactly the same, same details about payment renewals... what are you expecting from people...? for them to pay?!

A bit steep. My 4 passports for my wife and I (both dual citizens) range from a low of £22.72 to a high of £63.11 and total £205.95. Those do not include pictures or postage.

You want a bad price.. try sending it to the British embassy. You've got to be careful of the exchange rates. Last time it cost me $310AUD for a UK passport now the price has gone down to $258 AUD.
I think the Americans have a good deal.. I hear it costs them about $100US

yes, it's a rip-off. they claim that the price of a passport is used to help britons abroad. i've just renewed mine to delay the dreaded i.d. cards and the personal interviews, that will be compulsory for biometric testing. i wonder how much they will cost! my new passport has a chip and copper thread in it. welcome Big Brother!

I live in Poland where salaries are much lower than in the UK and when I had to renew my passport in the British Embassy in Warsaw it was like paying the equivalent of 250 pounds

The fee is to primarily assist the passport holder in the event they get in trouble abroad!

Someone's got to pay for border security to see that the terrorists are kept out and that you are let back in. Would you rather pay £153 every ten years or an extra penny on your income tax?

It's absolutely extortionate especially considering the passport office has THE WORST service!
I have had one passport go missing whilst in their possession (was waiting for renewal) so had to then start all over again and apply for a whole new one. I decided not to take any risks so I went to the passport office in London in person - at the desk the lady (who could barely speak english) was checking through my paperwork she thought the 4 in my date of birth was a 7???!! I noticed this and corrected her. When my passport finally arrived through the post .... guess what the '4' had been processed as a '7'. I then had to go through the nightmare again to get it rectified at MY COST.

I agree! We had to renew 4 of ours at the same time (1 adult, 3 children) and I nearly fell over when I heard how much it was going to cost. We did our own photos at home using a digital camera, which saved a few pennies. And my husband will need to renew his visa when we return to the UK in the future, which will cost between £500 - £800 pounds - grrrrr. We've been married 10 years, he shouldn't be charged. My visa for coming to live in Japan only cost £4.00!
