They used to put that on papers when the mother refused to give up the name of the father (I think). It depends on who gave you that information. Did your biological mother give it to you? You can have agencies help you track down your biological parents, if you're ready.

Usually it says unknown because the mother didn't want his name on anything - she might not have liked him very much - she might have loved him very much but one of them wasn't available - he might have been well known.
Try not to think of nasty reasons.
He might have been a good important person.

The best thing to do is contact your birth mother and ask her. There will probably only be 2 people in the whole world who know for sure if this is right or not, your birth mother and farther.
It is quite possible that your farther was a priest of course it is. No one is perfect not even a priest but it's also possible it could be your next door neighbor. In other words you just don't know without speaking to the women who gave birth to you.

anything is possible, but if you are an adult, the only way you can find out for sure is to contact your biological mother. other than that there is no way you could ever find out it would be impossible. who gave you the imformaion you have been told about who your biological father could have been ? and if father unknown then they must have some inside information perhaps they know the family of your biological mother but gossip is terrible, there is nothing like kicking a person when they are already down. don't worry about this too much on plenty of adoption papers it states father unknown

Unknown simply means unknown. Your birth mother probably didn't know who the father was or not willing to say. The only way to get answers is to see if you can contact your birth mother and ask questions. If you already have and she says he could've been a catholic priest.. that is possible.

Why would anyone tell you that? If they know that much then they must know who your birth mother is and she would surely know who your birth father is.

who knows?
For some reason your mother did not name your father. This could be for many reasons.
she did not know
the guy was a jerk
if a mother wants to put her baby up for adoption, both the mother and father have to agree to this. If she thought, maybe he would want custody of the child, and she did not want him to, she could simply tell the agrency she does not know who the father is (is he is not listed on the birth certificate). If she knew, but did not know where to find him, she could say she did not know who it was, to speed up the adoption.
if your mom or other close family are not around or do not know, then you are out of luck.

Your bio mom most likely knows. They will put UNKNOWN simply if the father does not sign the birth certificate. Your father could have also been asked to not sign to make the adoption process easier.
TO ALL THOSE calling you stupid or writing duh how should I know.... If you don't have anything nice to say on this subject... keep your negative remarks to your self!

that depends on who gave you the information. you can contact social services to ask for help. speak to your parents-don't be scared of offending them. my younger brother is adopted and eventually in his teens needed to find out if he had any brothers/sisters. we all supported him as we all love him. he's now in his 30's with a child of his own.

Okay, here is what you can do within your rights as an american citizen. If your father has DNA on file with the NCIC or with any local, county, or state police dept in the US you can be tested and request it to be cross examined against all men in the data base. I do believe that most likely he isn't a priest, but that is always a possibility. Agreeing with others it depends on the creditability of the person who gave you the information. Good luck finding your father and I hope it all goes well!

Yes, if the father is unknown, anything is possible. Concentrate on the maternal side, but please bear in mind, that your first mom may have issues with who impregnated her and she may back off if she feels like she is going to have to discuss it. Go slow. Sounds like she has a reason for putting "father unknown." Best wishes.

Father unknown usually means.. either Mother didnt know who the father was or wasnt willing to admit it... nothing else.
If you have information that means it could be a catholic priest then .. who knows!? Hes still a man!!
Anything is possible & would certainly explain why she didnt want to admit it.

I think you're wondering what it means in terms of your birth certificate. It means that when you were born, your mother did not report a known person as father; not's that uncommon.
I hate to tell you, but only your birth mother would have any information regarding the identity of your father. If it says "unknown," no social service would know his name because, as far as their records are concerned, the father it not known.
Anything is possible. Priests have been know to impregnate women. Perhaps the father being a priest is why your mother chose not to officially identify him
I wish you the best of luck. The not knowing should not interfere with your future success.
(He's asking for help and advice...why the name calling??? Time for some to grow up!)

Read the other question to which Heather directs you. There are some good answers. I realize there is the possibility that your mother did not name the father. However, keep in mind also that some states have not always allowed a father to be named (by law) on the birth certificate if the mother was unmarried. Because of this, your natural mother may have been barred from naming the father even if she wanted to do so. Don't assume it was her decision, because it may not have been.
The only way you'll probably have a possibility of finding out who the truth is to find your natural mother and ask her. Do you know her name?

It is possible. But I wouldn't assume it just because he is listed as unknown.
I missed Heather's earlier question, but I happen to know my original birth certificate does not name my father (even though I've never seen it). The reason my father is not named is due to the practice in Ohio at the time of my birth. My first mom wrote in my father's name, but it was crossed off because they weren't married and there was no "proof" that he was the father. Your situation may have been similar.
Practices varied from state to state, but it is possible that either your mother didn't know or she wasn't allowed to name a man.

That would explain why Catholic organizations fight so hard to keep our own records from us!
There could be any number of reasons. I asked a similar question -
