As always the answer is very simple, money and speed.
Speed sells car ........

Okay there are good reasons. First, money. If the automakers sold cars below 75 it would lower profits. I think your not a speed fanatic, but what would you rather have. The speedy streamlined car or the slow boxy car. Also men like to get the big v-8s which are very fast. Even if there was a 75 mph speed limit, there will always be someone souping up their car and breaking the limit.

No one would buy them. As it is, people routinely go out and by their teenagers cars that will go 120+ mph when slower safer cars are available.

Because nobody would buy it. There are plenty of vehicle out there that are speed limited by power and design that many people to buy, but it aribitrarily limit speed is silly.
Also, many people are capable of driving at speeds in excess of 100 mph, but the legal system will not allow them. At the same time, there are people I wouldn't get into a car with going 5 mph because they are dangerous.
If you are concerned about safety, and nothing else, then you need stricter driving training and testing laws need to be enacted, not new vehicles produced. In the USA anyone with a face and a birth certificate can get a driver's license, and that needs to change. Driving is a priviledge, not a right.

If they could only go 75MPH I wouldn't like it. I'm usually late now and my car can go as fast as I want....sheesh!

Many cars now have a safety cutoff at 95 mph. Most people just don't know about them because they don't drive that fast.
I tried to drive my GMC Jimmy on the Autobahn when we lived in Germany and found out about the switch. Had it disabled.

Unless backed by legal laws, it wouldn't make much difference.
So law makers and factories should work out a plan for a better , safer driving experience.
Personally, I'd drive at an average 45kph, that's why i opt more for public transports, beside the traffic jam.

johan

Yep, speed sells...And that's kind of strange since the maximum posted speed limit in this country (US) is 75 mph - and that's only in 9 states...A more logical solution to start with would be to have all speedometers calibrated between 0-80 mph...I think most drivers would be less inclined to peg out at the top end and not really know exactly how fast they are going...The government could mandate this change...And if all vehicles were to be rated this way, then I believe there would be fewer speeding tickets anyway and maybe a few less fatalities.

Because of a few reasons. First, it probably wouldn't lower the amount of accidents. The expressway is the safest place to drive (no stops or opposing traffic). Most accidents happen on secondary streets where people don't drive 75 MPH anyhow. Driving slowly does not mean you are driving safely. Second, if someone wants to go faster than 75 mph, they'll find a way to make it happen. Third, some states have speed limits that are higher than 75 mph (Montana used to not have a speed limit, not sure if it's still that way), so what manufacturer would want to make different cars for different states? It would cost too much.

Because if they did, everyone would be here asking "How do I make my car go faster?" Doesn't the government intrude into your life enough now? People just need to follow the speed limits and it wouldn't matter how fast it *could* go because they wouldn't.

I've often wondered this.
If I buy a lorry it's restricted to 56mph, I have no choice, so why not do the same for cars (but obviously 75mph)?

If a car had a limit of only 75 mph I'm sure no one would buy them. Its not the automakers who cause accidents its the person driving the car.

Most cars have speed and engine RPM limiters right now but they are set very high. If people would not want to speed so much, every thing would be fine. Probably in the near future, manufactures will be forced to lower the upper range of the limiters, but that doesn't stop hackers from reprograming them to anything they want.

cars are already governed to go no faster than their design and tires were intended for.
Safety requires the capability to go faster in an emergency, do you really want to realize you can't get out of the way of that train you didn't see a split second earlier because you wished your car couldn't go fast?

oh come on.... who gave me the thumbs down? it's common sense!
