I agree, it's a stupid law.
Horses are dangerous too, should the laws make it illegal to ride a horse?

All of these people are not answering your question. You have to wear it because the government says you do. They are telling you that you no longer have the choice regarding how many safety precautions you want to take to protect yourself. You will be punished if you do not take the proper steps to ensure your own safety. Your question should be why do these laws exist in America? I don't know the answer to that. I don't know how lawmakers saw these regulations as consistent with the ideas of liberty or a free country.

seatbelts ONLY protect the one wearing it. so you wearing a seatbelt wont protect others.

if you get pulled over by the cops, even if your by yourself, you can be found in violation of driving laws.

I guess that it's your choice, my friend. If you choose to be fined (if you are caught) by the authority for not using it - go ahead and forget about your safety belt. Even if you are alone in your car and driving CAREFULLY, others may just knock your car off the road, thus by wearing your belt will help to prevent more serious/fatal injury to yourself. It happened to me once !!!

Because as Americans we tend to do stupid things with our Cars Speed, run red lights, drive on the wrong side of the road, etc and not taking the time to buckle up the one thing that makes all the other safety items (air bags Safety glass, Collapsible steering Columns.) work properly. So we had to have a law REQUIRING that you must buckle your seat belt.

Even if no one else is in the car with you an accident can still happen and without a seat belt you could be ejected from the car, impaled in the steering column, have your face destroyed by hitting an airbag as it expands.

Think about what happened to Dale Earnhardt He was wearing a Four point System That BROKE when hit the wall he would still be driving if his seat belt didn't fail.

I will chose to wear one every time I get in a car you never know what might happen

Seat belts are meant for ones own safety not every one else's, so that's why even if one is alone in the vehicle one must put their seat belts on! I have read some where that accidents can be fatal even at 25 kph thats around 15.5 mph!! SO SEATS BELTS ARE A MUST AT ALL TIMES !!

Because even 'drivers' can get killed more often if they don't fasten their seat belts. I think that even BUSSES should have them ... but I suppose that would be 'expecting too much' of both the passengers and the drivers. FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT EVERY TIME YOU ARE IN THE CAR!

Here's why. If you want to act a fool and get in an accident and not wear your seatbelt you just turned a potential 20 minute slowing of traffic into a 2 hour long fatality scene. That's why.

Because if you don't, and you have an accident, you will fly out the window, and your head will splatter all over the concrete like a damn rotten watermelon. Somebody has to clean that up, and you have no right to inflict that on anybody. Somebody's children might see that mess, and have nightmares for the rest of their lives, and nobody has the right to inflict that on a child. Your body flying out the window like a missile can kill somebody, and nobody has the right to do that to another human being.

A bit of a silly question really.
You wear a seat belt for your own safety.
You ( as a driver ) make your passengers wear their seatbelt for their safety.
Do you really want to go flying out of the windscreen, and end up dead on the road in front ?
Its common sense really, just wear the seat belt, they can save peoples lifes.

because if you get in an accident you are less likely to end up as a vegatable being supported by tax dollars for 30 years if you wear your seatbelt.
