You have a bit of a point, there, but some people are not completely blind. There are some people who are 100% legally blind, and then some people who may still have enough vision to drive, but are not to see different numbers due to the blending of colors and other things like that.

Most ATM manufacturers use interchangable parts for all of their ATM's. It's cheaper than manufacturing a different set of keypads, buttons, etc.. for all of the different ATM styles, so the keypads and other pieces that are braile-imprinted are used.

Also, many ATMs that are used in drive-up lanes are the same ATM's that are placed indoors as well. They just figure it's easier (and cheaper) to use the same equipment everywhere.

There are actually a few reasons why banks put Braille on drive-up ATMs. One reason is concerns over customer privacy. If an automatic teller machine were programmed to "talk" to visually impaired customers electronically, bystanders with evil intent might overhear private information such as personal identification numbers, account balances and account numbers. The actual number of times a visually impaired customer might actually walk up to a drive up ATM to conduct business may be low, but banks cannot be too careful when it comes to protecting private information.

Another reason banks put Braille on drive-up ATMs is to satisfy federal regulations regarding accommodations for the handicapped. Under these laws, public institutions are required to make most if not all of their services accessible by the visually, hearing and physically impaired.

Curious_One
i always wondered this myself, i was told that all atm machines are manufactured the same and the drive up ones are constructed the same as the walk up ones so the keys all have braille on them. besides, i guess there's a chance a drive up one could allow for a blind person to get out of the car and make their own private transaction.

....whats the difference? Doesn't NY have a blind governor? Imagine what you could get signed! haha LOL .....ok, wrong but funny!

The Intelligent One
It's because the ATM machine is a standard device. Most manufacturers only make one kind of machine. The machines are deployed everywhere, including drive-in locations (but also including places inaccessible to cars). It's all about reducing manufacturing costs by reducing the number of different designs that the companies have to make.
