The only time that they would do this is if the vehicle had some type of spark and a leaking gas tank and the flumes then would cause this......very very rare.
A lot of cars have flipped upside down and not exploded. The main reason a vehicle would explode is if fuel leaked out of the tank and something Causes the fuel vapors to ignite ,Spark, Heat, etc
They don't. Vehicle "explosions" are rare (obviously excluding haz-mat cargoes). I've responded to lots of crashes with the car inverted and NO explosions. We had one that came off the end of a 65mph road (expressway transitioned to a 30mph surface street), inverted, took out a few small (5" dia) trees, finally a 40ft tall street light, over ~200ft then kept going for another 50 some odd feet before stopping. The driver self extricated and fled the scene.
