What is it that causes suv's to rollover more than cars?
|
I need to know what makes the suv's rollover easier than cars? I also would like to know if this problem has been improved since it first was detected, which models are NOT prone to the rollover and if the same applies to vans.
I am considering an suv and need to know the SAFEST one's out there, I am leary of buying one but need the extra room they offer in comparison to a car. Additional Details Everyone who answered thank you so much..everyone has really given me useful information. again thank you.

Higher center of gravity. But newer SUV's drive just like cars.

the suv is taller and has a tendensy to roll over. you need to be extra careful when driving around curves, and tire inflation. any vehicle that is tall will always turn over faster than one close to the ground.. idon't lilke suv's.i advise you to not get one..

well, rollovers in suv's are due to a high center of gravity, and since they are more top heavy, they flip easier... i am not an expert or ne thing but i do know that they have improved on this some in recent years.... most notably i can tell you that ford explorers(ford exploders!) are among the worst... if you want an suv i would say to go with an older suburban... 1990-1995ish... they have a great amount of room and are made sturdier than new vehicles that hve all this plastic on them. they dont have the new srs curtain airbags but they are good sturdy suvs.

they turn over because their taller than other vehicles are,and usually a little more narrow also, the best SUV,s are the one that set closer to the ground, and are also wider,it has to do with the center of gravity on it ,like a tall glass it will tilt over easier than a short one will ,same thing applies to a SUV,the safest ones are the ones that set lower, and are wider,to the ground, that's the one main reason they do this, good luck hope this helps.

the people who drive them mostly. being more top heavy a person should be aware of this. its like the firestone explorer issue. they would not say it but 90 percent of people drove to fast and did not properly maintain their tires.

The main reason is they're top heavy and the use a soft set up suspension. I'd look into one of the newer styles that are more low profile and a wide stance. Im sure there is a roll over rating somewhere, I remeber reading it, just cant remeber where.

if you want to get one than you need to get the shortest one. the reason they're more prone to rollovers is that their center of gravity is higher because they're taller than other cars (sedans).

They are higher off the ground but their width is the same as cars. This extra height will cause rollovers because there is more weight higher off the ground.

the reason that suv's roll over is that they have a higher center of gravity than a car, but they make them feel and ride like a car, so people expect them to handle like a car and therefore drive them too fast and roll them... if you drive sensibly, almost any suv is safe...

Hi, Many reasons why suvs roll easier than a car are high center of gravity, bigger tires, and weak suspension. A few years back Ford Explorer did some changes to help this problem. Independent rear suspension, a bit lower in height, and a bit shorter tires. Most all newer suvs that have electronic trac control help alot. The extra long large vans have a bad luck of rolling with a blow out in the rear if going too fast. The driver however is mostly the culprit of just plain going around corners too fast and sudden higher speed maneuvers, which are a no no.

SUV's are taller than other cars and not as wide so they tilt easier when some moron who doesn't know how to drive in the first place, slams on the brakes and turns the wheel suddenly to the right or left... and the SUV rolls... because the DRIVER IS STUPID and probably shouldn't be RIDING in an SUV... let alone DRIVING one.
I see them all the time... going too fast... following too closely... and driving WAY beyond their abilities.

The weight distribution is generally higher in the vehical making it top heavy. When speeding like most do,a quick correction in direction makes the vehical pitch off and the driver over corrects it causes a roll over.SUV`s are not a problem if you drive correctly.

Lots of good answers here. Yes, it's the high center of gravity. Kind of like the difference between a Barcalounger and a Barstool. Which is more likely to tip over (not counting the effect of the most frequent activity on each)?
Just a note of explanation: The high center of gravity is due to the greater ground clearance that is one of the reasons people buy SUVs. In the ones that are designed for serious off-roading (you probably won't be considering these), they are also narrower so that they can fit through narrow spaces between rocks and along narrow ledges.
Another factor is articulation. Real off-road SUVs have a lot of suspension travel, and wheels at opposite corners can take crazy angles with each other, vertically, That helps them keep their 'feet' planted on the ground for firm grip, but the springs have to be soft to allow this, which makes them mushier on road.
As I said, the ones you are probably considering don't fall into that category. Look for car-based SUVs, like the Nissan Murano. They have independent suspensions like the cars they share chassis with. Avoid truck-based ('body-on-frame') SUVs like the Toyota 4-Runner and Chevy Tahoe that have solid rear axles rather than independent suspension.
No one else has mentioned minivans, probably because of the 'soccer mom' stigma. But most of these have a lower center of gravity than an SUV, and will handle more car-like. They also get better gas mileage. For a given amount of cargo and passengers, they take up less room on the road, and are easier to park.
Look at Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, and the new Chryslers coming out this fall that have independent suspension for the first time (not counting the old AWD versions). These are the best compromise between safety and capacity.
Good luck and safe driving!
