Sympathy for death in DUI accident?
|
This kid that was liked by a lot of people made the mistake of drinking and driving, he crashed his car and died. It seems people have an attitude like "well he got what he deserved by doing something so stupid"
Is that how a lot of people feel about this kind of situation?

I would have sympathy for the loss his family is dealing with, but he was being dumb, even my 6 year old knows that you aren't supposed to drink and drive. I have no sympathy for him, it is a still a tragedy, but mostly for his family and friends at this point.
Survival of the fittest, I guess. Weed out the dumb or weak ones first... Sounds mean I know. I had a friend that died that way, a few years back. I seen him a stupid for doing it too.

I don't think this young man deserved to lose his life because of a mistake. I feel badly for his family and friends who are suffering with the loss of their loved one. I would guess that the people making such cold and callous judgments were probably not close to him. Empathy and compassion aren't always easy to give to those we aren't close to... many people find it easier to be judgmental and self-righteous.

Sympathy is for the living. Loss of a child, grandchild, sibling, classmate, etc. calls for sympathy from those who are capable of it.
"...got what he deserved..." strikes me as the viewpoint of a person who never knew anyone who died while DUI.
What he deserved, most likely, was more supervision, more help, and/or more serious consequences from those in a position to know what was going on and the resources to act on it.

I have sympathy for the people who now realize they should have talked sense to him but for various reasons fell short of success at doing what they knew needed to be done.

Although they may be interpreted as being "cold", they are also being honest. It was a foolish thing to do. Another young life full of potential wasted. How sad.

My sympathies would lie with the families of the victims, including that of the driver.
These people didn't "get what they deserved." They deserved the continued company of the loved one they lost. The deceased hasn't learned anything. He is dead. He is beyond "deserving" anything.
