Is it safe to put a booster seat in the middle of the back seat of the car?

according the california highway patrol, the worst place to put a car seat is in the middle seat. Reason is in case of a rear end impact, the seatbelts could break and the child will launch into the windshield and there is nothing you can do about it.
Having the seat on the side behind a seat is preferred because at worst the child can't launch outwards and the seat belt won't be able to "stretch" as far.

your local highway patrol would know best.

Put the car seat behind the passengers seat and this way if you need to glance at the child you can do so very quickly without having to look all the way over behind the drivers seat........

Yes if the child is heavy enough for the seat belt being used in most cases - kids have to be belted in all the time of course

yes, but only if there is a lap/shoulder belt combo there. A booster seat cannot be used with a lap belt only. Check your manual because I know it says this in there.

Only if that seating position has a lap and shoulder belt available. Other carseats can be safely installed with only a lap belt... but a booster seat needs both a lap and a shoulder belt:
http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/boosterbasics.aspx

"There are no booster seats that can be used with just a lap belt, with the exception of shield boosters which are not recommended. The lap and shoulder belt must both be used with a booster seat. Using only the lap belt risks head and neck injury. Using the shoulder belt risks submarining (sliding under the belt) and ejection."

Lap belts alone should also not be used for passengers riding without a child safety seat if at all possible:
http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/lapbelts.aspx

In many cases, when used alone... "the lap belt causes extreme force to be applied along the pelvis to the mid-section of the occupant. Securing the waist without securing the upper torso leads to increased head and neck velocities, which can cause serious head and neck injuries following either a head strike or inertial loading of the spine."

Hope that helps!
