Sean Monro
Is it OK to drive after one beer / wine?
I'm just wondering. I haven't even learnt to drive yet, but want to!

Hello Sean, You have also stated that you have not learned to drive yet. This is a concern. Sean alcohol (no matter the amount) impairs a persons vision and rate of performance. A person is at a much higher risk of having an accident after drinking; And that involves individuals who have driving experience. Sean if you value your life and also the live(s) of other individuals who are "on the road" at the same time; Then do not drink and drive,,,,,even if it is just one beer! Sean I am Sorry and i hate to be Blunt ,,,,,but think to yourself right now,,,,,,,,, do you want to sober up really quick by sending a friend for yourself (as you are escorted to the jail) to go to the emergency room to see if the little 4 year old girl lived or died in a accident which you could have caused.

Any alcohol affects your reaction time so it is not advisable, but it is legal. A pint and a half of ordinary strength beer will still be undere the legal limit. Two small measures of wine the same.

Drinking and driving is very dangerous alcohol is a drug so it will affect your driving ability, it starts out as one drink until you get drunk and either hurt someone or kill them or yourself. There is a group called MADD mothers against drunk driving, until you have lost a loved one to a drunk driver you will never know. Please Don't Drink And Drive under any sircumstances, call a cab or have driver that did not or does not drink, save a life.

When this or a similar question comes up in your theory test, the answer is NO. If you even question whether you can have a drink, then you will fail your test.

If you think you are not affected by just one drink, remember that yours is the opinion of someone who is under the influence of alcohol. That one drink is enough to fuzz your brain into thinking it is not affected.

If your driving, do NOT drink at all. Beers, Wines and Spirits are all different levels - one sipe of some of them can put you over the limit.

1 12 oz beer,1 glass of wine or 1 1 liquor mixed drink all contain approx 1 ounce of alcohol. And it takes your body approx 1 hour to process that amount. So the answer to your question is for every drink you consume you have to wait 1 hour before you are LEGALLY SOBER ENOUGH to drive.Anything shorter than that and you are taking a chance on being busted for DWI,not to mention the trouble you will get in for driving without a valid license.

With half an onze of common sense yes, the safety brigade will say don't drink at all, but most people are fine after one drink, and will normally only come up with an orange light on a breathalyser. The truth is drink is used as a scapegoat to blame as many accidents as they can, it does not affect your driving seriously until you can feel the effects yourself.

I know there will be objections to this but, after half a bottle of Scotch i know I'm still more fit to drive than many people that have just passed their tests and are completly sober. This is due in part to the fact i handle alcohol well, but largely due to the fact that in order to pass your test on British roads now you are required to show you can follow the book to the letter and will fail if you show evidence of being able to think boyond it. Driving competance is not required.

It is best to not drive if you have had any alcohol. Regardless of what the law says, if you drink and drive it can be dangerous. Everyone has there limits and it is true that some people have higher limits than others. Till you know that the legal limit of alcohol does not impair your judgment or driving skills, it is best to let some one else drive till you body eliminates whatever you drank.

Not really, no.

Controlling what can be up to 2.5 metric tonnes of metal at up to 100 feet per second on todays roads demands all the concentration you can muster.

I drive as part of my work, so losing my licence is not an available option: I use the pilot's rule of "Eight hours from bottle to throttle".

In the UK the drink drive limit is about 1 and a half pints of normal strength larger or beer (IE not premium larger), 3 small glasses of wine or a triple whiskey. For an average man. Women would need approx a third less to be breaking the law.
This equates to 80ml of alcohol per 1ltr of breath.
Don't know the blood level measure.

only if you're willing to give up your freedom, license, and life as you know it. if you get stopped, and you blow an alcohol level unacceptable for your state, or just seem intoxicated, you can be arrested, lose your license, get fined, and get jail time. or you could be a real light weight, get in an accident, and kill someone. how would you like to live with THAT for the rest of your life.
drinking and driving do NOT go together. don't be stupid, if you're going to drink, stay put, or call a cab, or do it at home. be responsible, and don't ruin someone ELSE's life for your fun.

One drink should not impair your decision making process, unless you belong to that 1/3 of the population that has no tolerance for alcohol.

That said, please remember that probationary drivers CAN NOT DRINK AT ALL. If found drinking their probationary licenses will be suspended without possibility of reinstatement for years.
