How to handle the glare while driving at night, from oncoming vehicles with high-beam on ?
|
I recently started driving in Chennai(India). I have been finding driving very difficult in the night when the oncoming vehicles have their headlights on high-beam. I'm literally blinded by them. Since this is very dangerous, I thought of seeking your help and wanted to find out how you tackle this problem. Any advice from you guys will be very much appreciated.

Just put your high beams on too , that will usually make them switch to low beams

Try this next time and think of me , When the car/truck approaches you from a distance just before he gets close enough to hurt your eyes look to the side of the road follow the edge until he passes and then look straight ahead your problem solved. hope this helps,

Light amber colored polarized glasses, and look down to the opposite side of your lane. (which would be to the right in the U.S.)

In the states, you flash your lights at them ONCE....this tells the other driver their high beams are on and they turn them off. Otherwise, look to the right of the beams..never look into them, or you'll end up driving straight into the other car.

1. never look at the headlight directly
2. anti glare laminations are available for front glass, fit them if you can
3. if you are wearing specs then start using the anti-glare lenses
4. adjust your speed according to visibility
5. if you cannot see the sides of road use high beams so that you can see pedestrians, cyclists, obstacles etc.
6. in doubt - slow down and allow any other vehicle on your line to overtake you. they will shield most of the glare. plus you can see the road clearly if it is of type with high ground clearence.

its really very difficult to drive at night ,as i also face the same problem
i would suggest to plaster a black film on ur front glass within ur eye range, bt use the film which easy to see threw at day time also
request the oncoming vehicle to keep low beam by pressing upper/deeper signal
if u can adjust then find the other way where the traffic is less to ur destination
and what may happen dnt close ur eyes try to see threw
and this is one that i do most IF I SEE THE ONCOMING VEHICLE IS ON HIGH BEAM AND U CANT SEE ANYTHING, SLOW DOWN MY VEHICLE AND TRY TO KEEP AT ONE SIDE AS SLOW AS I CAN TILL THAT VEHICLE IS PASSED THREW
its difficult to do all time, bt driving slow and keeping eye on track as much as can is the best solution u have

In the US you must dim your lights when a car is approaching in the opposite direction. A ticket can be issued if you fail to do so. It is best to look indirectly at your path until the car passes.

Flash your high beams, but do not leave them on. If everybody is blind everybody could die in a head-on crash. While his lights are still on high, focus on the side of the road ahead of the your car so you have something to guide you in your lane, and it keeps the worst of the glare out of your eyes.

Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, look directly at their headlights! Focus on the reflective stripe on the right side of the road until they pass, and maintain control of your vehicle without drifting.

ANOTHER pet peeve of mine. I hate that too! Makes you want to carry a high powered spot light in your car and just shine it down their face, doesn't it? Of course, that could result in mutual destruction so let's not do that...
I'd go with a combination of what Mr. The Pine, Fred C, and Bikernoj said.
Give the a BRIEF flash of your own high beams. Not enough to blind them too, but just a friendly reminder that they are contributing to an unsafe situation and may well be breaking local laws.
Do NOT look toward the oncoming vehicles lights, reduce speed and pick a spot, like the white stripe (if there's one present) on the side of the road away from the vehicle until it has passed.
Also keep your winshield clean as this can help cut glare.
I personally have never tried night glasses, but I would be cautious using anything that might reduce my own ability to see clearly.
