Driving in the snow advice please?
We have about 6 inches of snow outside at the moment and more to come over night, our little roads don't get any grit as they are not major roads. Some of us have got to get to work in the morning, are there any tips about driving in the snow safely.
Thanks

This is about the first time in around 6 years that we have had this kind of weather, tyre chains don't really happen here. Just not used to it and it seems to throw everyone in a panic.
My journey will be from Guildford to St Albans (UK) approx 50 miles so you can imagin I'm just not looking forward to it at 7 am in the morning.

Don't go into work!
Or if you do, drive slowly. Maybe grit your road?

Wait for the snow plows if your are not used to snow and call work to let them know of the delay.
The type and condition of your vehicle have direct bearing on how you can make it through the snow and then again there is the other people driving too.
6 inches of snow isn't too bad for most vehicles with good tires, anymore than that is more of a challenge.

Without snow chains you will need to be fairly carefull. When accelerating don't use the accelerator. Simply let up the clutch gently and if/where necessary gently press the accelerator to stop the car from stalling till in motion.

Drive slow pay attention to your surroundings and keep your distance.

When braking engine brake rather than use your actual brakes so anticipate that you will need to slow and lift off the accelerator gradually. Use the brakes as a last resort as it were.

You really need a Snow Chain/Tire Chain. This more safety than driving slowly.

I agree with the other answer which said to just stay home since you don't know. We have no idea what condition your vehicle is in or how you will handle these conditions. Since you are uncertain in your ability, you are best to stay safe and not attempt it. Have someone who is knowledgeable in automotive mechanics check over your vehicle and let you know if it is fit for winter travel. Then at some point, familiarize yourself with how your vehicle handles in these conditions in an open and secluded area such as an open and empty parking lot. Then you should have the confidence to travel in this situation and not have to ask others if we think you can handle it or how, for we cannot effectively answer you.

Set off in 2nd gear to avoid skidding. Drive carefully, ensure your car is free of snow from windows and bodywork. Use your wipers, and switch on your lights (yes even in daylight). Take your time and allow extra minutes for your journey.

Make sure you have RAC/AA/Greenflag breakdown cover.

Keep a coat in the car and ensure the vehicle is in full working order with correct oil, brake fluid and coolant levels. Keep an ice scraper in the car, plus antifreeze.

If warming the car up in the morning, before you set off, do not leave the vehicle unattended. Thieves love this time of year and often steal cars that are left running with keys in.

Watch for black ice or any ice on the road. Avoid sudden brakes and speeding up quickly. But if your car has ABS, slamming on your brakes to avoid something is better than taping the brakes. Hitting the brakes hard is the only why to activate ABS. And besides if you're comfortable driving faster (if your car has ABS and good tires), that might be OK.

If you are asking for advice then you do not have the knowledge and confidence to drive in these conditions so you maybe risking your life. To drive that distance you will probably find a lot of obstacles and it's impossible to estimate what time you will arrive. I'm sure you can find some excuse to take the day off. Be wise and realistic.

Just take it slow, don't brake suddenly and take it slower in the corners. Feather the throttle to prevent wheel slip. Also let plenty of space between you and the cars in front of you.

Stay at home is the easy answer but if you must go out then first put a spade or shovel in your car also a good travelling rug or warm blanket ans a flask of tea or coffee better still there is nothing better that hot soup if you get stuck and you get cold , always make sure you have plenty of fuel to keep the engine going if you get stuck in the snow. The rest is take care drive as the conditions permit. Driving slow is not always the answer sometimes you will need a bit of speed to take you through drifts or up hills, when almost over slow by taking you foot off the throttle when going down a hill go down the gears slowly to slow you , Try and keep as much distance between you and the vehicle in front, so if the go off the road or what ever you will have some time to consider what to do. Keeping your head light and tail light lens clear as well as your windscreen, see and be seen is a good motto to have.A good tip for frozen light lens rather than scrape them as some of the new cars have plastic lens, fill a liquid soap squeezy bottle or similar with a strong solution of windscreen wash and you wil find it will clear snow and ice in a jiffy. The rest is down to experiance but good luck if you go out Oh make sure your moble phone battery is fully charged and drive with your radio down low, so if your drive wheels start to spin you should hear the engine start to race.
