Driving in snow - does anyone have this problem?
I drive a 2006 ford crown victoria police interceptor. My car came from Texas and it has all-season tires. I am in NY. Well, when i drive in the snow, it's manageable if you take your time and travel slow. When I come to a complete stop at a stop sign and try to get going again it feels like the car wants to fishtail. Even when I’m sitting at a red light, the moment it turns green and I take my foot of the break and lightly press on the gas it feels like it wants to fishtail (sometimes the car goes ZiGzAG for a few seconds till I get it under control). I’m wondering if this is a result of the all-season tires. Today was just snow & slush. Does anyone have this problem sometimes? What do you do? Do you think it is because I don’t have snow tires?

Also, about a block down the road from where I live is a road that is just a little unbalanced, it’s just a slight hill at the stop sign. Anyway, when I approach this stop sign, I will slow down but I won’t actually stop…I will drive straight through as long as I’m confident there are no cars coming. I drove through it like that a few times this winter just because when I made a complete stop there before and took my foot of the brake, obviously the car is not going to move since I’m on a hill so I had to tap the gas just a little, and the moment I pressed the gas, it forced me to make a left hand turn. Fortunately, I was the only car on that road at the time. it’s a small street, not too many cars are there all at once so it’s not heavy traffic. I want to get an opinion about what you think when I slow down but I drive through the stop sign without stopping. I pass the stop sign at about 12 mph. Given the conditions of the road, do you think I’m okay doing that as long as I’m sure I can do it safely and I know no cars are coming?

I hate driving in the winter. Do any of you have these sort of issues with the snow?

My car also has rear wheel drive…many cars have front wheel drive. I wonder if that is part of the problem. What do u think?

dude, i already knew ur car waz rear wheel drive, before i got 2 the end of ur ???. cuz u said it waz fishtailing. thats why! i never had snow tires before. i guess they would help. i mite b able 2 find out 4 u. sum of my friends r mechanics. if i waz u id just keep slowly rollin thru that stop sign. its better than slidin of the road. also ur car must b an automatic.mine is 2. the car just want 2 gooooo when u aint got ur foot on the brake. yup!!! & when u give it gas 2 get up 2 speed ,the car wants 2 keep goin faster & faster even if u dont want 2. also, slush is still slippery. i pretty much slid down my driveway instead of walkin down it earlier 2nite. so b careful my friend. ok .mel :)

First, get yourself some good tires. If you are upstate, definitely look into snow tires.

Second, when starting from a stop in snow or ice, put the transmission in second gear. This keeps the engine from sending too much power to the wheels and spinning them. Spinning tires will slide sideways, especially if the road has a lot of cross slope ( This works with FWD cars, too).

First of all, you need the best tires on the rear wheels in the winter, and you need to put some weight over the rear wheels to give you more traction.

Confident experienced drivers prefer RWD or AWD. We can use the fishtailing to our advantage. Nervous Nelly people like Front WD cars becasue it makes them feel safe. TO much to get into but its a fact Front WD cars really are NOT better in the snow. The only advantage is sometimes capable of the 0 to 5 MPH get going without slipping ability. Get bumped in the rear of a Front WD car on snow and ice its a very good chance the car will spin. Not in a rear wheel drive car tho.

Look into some snow and ice tires.

Either you don't know how to drive in winter and are not driving with as much care as you think, or your tires are not all-season but, in reality, summer touring tires,, or performance tires, which make a car extremely dangerous in winter.
A Texas car quite possibly doesn't have all-season tires. Look on the tire for an "M & S" mark, and if it isn't there, replace your tires immediately with tires that do carry the mark.
If it does have the mark, check the tread depth. Even good all-season tires are unsafe in the winter with less than 4/32" of tread as the depth of the channels is not enough to disperse slush, or deep enough to grip ice, and the traction chunks on the outside edges aren't deep enough to grip the snow.
If rear wheel drive wasn't safe in winter, 95% of the police cars and taxis wouldn't be RWD, and most drivers over 35 would have been killed, as that was pretty much all there was on the road. I have driven over 1 1/2 million miles, probably 2/3 of that with RWD, and I have lived my whole driving life in Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg, and we get a lot of winter.

I live in NY and do not have snow tires, and I do fine. I drive slow on the local streets and highways, keep my distance from cars-extra space more than usual. If you slide while approaching stop signs or signals, consider slowing down sooner than you normally, do not brake hard, keep your steering wheel straight. Also make sure there is no soap on your tires from a recent car wash.

Most accidents at stop signs occur because one driver did not see the other while crossing the intersection. So you may have gotten by all this time accident free, please stop. The other reason is brake failure or drunk driving, which is not you.

Do not drive up or down hills. I was an eyewitness to an accident involving a minivan trying to turn on a hill and ended up flipping over after hitting the sidewalk and landing on a parked car. This is after seeing lots of cars sliding down that hill prior. Avoid hill completely if your car slides even on flat land, it will do worse on hills.
