Mostly all of the above. But what most people don't know is in most states in the U.S. it is illegal to operate a vehicle with a crack in the windshield that may block a drivers view of the road. That said, a windshield is NOT required for the safe operation of a vehicle. So if you ever get a crack in the windshield of your vehicle and you don't want a ticket, knock it out!

It not only blocks air and aids wind resistance, it protects the driver and passengers from sand, bugs, water and small rocks that get kicked up by the truck in front of you. Lately, it also provides a surface to mount the inside rearview mirror and GM used it for a place to hide the radio antenna. It also gives windshield repair shops job security.
