Are speed cameras in the UK effective at reducing driving speeds?
I was recently on holiday in the UK (from Canada) and was quite surprised to see the number of speed cameras (or warning signs, at least) on UK highways. I know that many drivers must find them irritating, but given that violations carry fairly substantial fines, it would appear that it must be difficult for drivers to ignore them. Does anyone know how effective the traffic camera systems have been at reducing speeds, or can you point me to references that discuss their effectiveness?

the one thing these cameras cause you to do is check your speedometer far too much in certain situations which has to affect your concentration on the road overall.

Overall it has been proven that speed camera's reduce accidents however we have gone over the top and have camera's where they are likely to actually cause an accident or offend genuine motorists....I believe If you like on ROSPA website you my get real figures

A fairer system for all would be to introduce speed limiters for cars so if your in a 30 limit you may switch your cars engine to this speed or lower ..

In Northampton UK we have one of the heaviest amounts of fines as there is a speed camera on most corners ...yet its the rural roads that suffer from fatalities the most

The most effective are the average speed cameras now being used more often at road works.

By monitoring the vehicles entering and leaving the speed restricted area, the average speed can be assessed and if the speed limit has been exceeded a speeding ticket can be issued.

In my opinion this has greatly slowed down drivers who would otherwise have just sped through.

No they do not reduce driving speeds drivers only slow down for the cameras then speed up again. That is why one council in the UK, i believe it to be Swindon is taking them down and will be saving £400,000 a year on expenses.

They have been in use in Australia for years. They have changed most drivers behaviour, but you still get the morons who think they are the best drivers in the world and speed limits don't apply to them.
On the opening day of a Melbourne tollway a Probationary driver, (First year) was booked at more than 50kph over the 100 kph limit and thought he was a hero because he got on TV. He wasn't so happy when his car was impounded for two days and he had to pay $560 fine plus lost his licence for three months.

people know where they are slow down then right after they think they are out of range they speed up.

.

Saving ONE LIFE means they are effective.

Drivers considering they are better than any speed limit are the problem.

I have instructed drivers with many, many years experience and the majority, 90%+ do NOT know how to brake effectively in an emergency, but they thought they could.

They have a proven effectiveness in cutting the rate of deaths due to speeding where they are used, and are extremely effective in raising revenue.

The Conservative-led Swindon Council (note) is - has been mentioned - thinking of cutting the number of cameras (no decision yet), but not because of their proven ineffectiveness. Rather, it's because - in the first place - they are not able to keep the revenue raised, and, secondly, subsequnt research that local Tories have done apparently 'suggests' there 'may' be better ways to spend the money. Road safety is clearly being put before cash and politics: there would have been no plans to cut the number of cameras if they'd been allowed to keep the sizeable revenue...

Speed cameras are the prostate exam of the road, nobody likes them but we're made to believe they're necessary.

The only people who like speed camera's are police and politicians because they bring in over 250 million dollars a year in revenue.

Nobody knows how many lives they save, because nobody cares.

The only good thing about them is once you know where they are, you can slow down as you come up to them and then speed off merrily as they go out of range.
