Possible Engine Stall Leads to Recall of 1.4 Million Korean Cars

Well-known Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai have issued a recall for some of their more popular models due to a potential problem with the engines. The recall involves approximately 1.4 million cars and SUVs that were sold in South Korea, Canada, and the US. Kia is a Hyundai affiliate brand, and together they make up the 5th largest automaker company in the world.

Which Vehicles are Involved?

According to an AP report, the recall involves Kia Optima midsize cars from 2011 to 2014, and Hyundai Sonata midsize cars from 2013 and 2014. It also included SUV models such as the Kia Sorento from 2012 to 2o14, the Kia Sportage from 2011 to 2013, and the Hyundai Santa Fe from 2013 and 2104.

All of these vehicles have either the 2.4- or the 2-liter engine. The US engines were made at the Hyundai plant in Alabama. The documents received by the US NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) indicated that there was some debris resulting from the engine manufacturing process. The debris can restrict the oil flow to the connecting rod bearings, which require the oil for cooling.

The restriction of the oil flow can thus lead to an increase in temperature that can cause the rod bearings to wear and eventually fail. This failure of the rod bearings can in turn lead to engine stall.

Before the engine stall, drivers may notice some symptoms that may indicate this problem. The engine may produce a knocking sound that becomes faster as the vehicle accelerates. The engine warning lights may also light up.

Though there have yet been no reports of accidents or injuries that are related to this problem, drivers that notice or suspect issues with their vehicle must contact their dealership right away. Once the recall starts, dealers will replace the components free of charge for the owners.
